Hi 👋🏼 I’m Dr. Khela, an Independent Optometrist

I’ve been practicing for the last 10+ years in the Bay Area. From private practice to corporate optometry, I have worked with patients of all ages ranging from from 4 to 100 👀

I love primary eye care and helping my patients see with their best potential vision. Whether I am prescribing glasses, contact lenses or sending them out for a surgical procedure like LASIK— the end goal is always clear and comfortable vision that fits their lifestyle.

I also manage medical cases like eye infections, dry eye and glaucoma — all within the scope of my license in the state of California.

I do not perform surgery, instead I send those cases out to trusted local ophthalmologists that I have a great working relationship with 🫶🏼💙

So let’s break down the differences between the three O’s: Optician, Optometrist, and Ophthalmologist.

Optician: A person trained and/or licensed in the sale of glasses and contact lenses in accordance with a patient’s prescription. They can assist with styling the right frame, choosing the right lens enhancements, and take measurements for the correct fit of glasses. They can use tools and machinery to cut lenses for frames, and adjust glasses to fit better with the aid of heat and other optical tools 🤓

Optometrist: A person with a bachelors degree, a four year degree(O.D.) from an accredited optometry school, and an optional 1 year residency focusing in a specific branch of optometry — ocular disease, specialty contact lenses, pediatrics, etc. The training encompasses vision and a medical focus on the eyes that is primarily non-surgical👀

Ophthalmologist: A person with a bachelors degree, a four medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited medical school, and 4+ years of residency + fellowship training in the field of ophthalmology. This encompasses medical training of the eyes in diagnosing and treating ocular diseases, injuries, surgical training and more depending on their specific program. A glaucoma specialist will have different training from a retinal surgeon vs a neuro-ophthalmologist 👀 🩺 💉

Hope this helps!

Fallin’ 🍁 in love with these sunnies 🕶️

Don’t forget to wear your sunglasses, even in the cooler months.

The UV index can be anywhere from 3-5 (moderate) during peak daylight hours.

Limiting UV exposure to the eyes is the number one way you can slow down pterygium, cataracts and macular damage to the eyes 👀

Not to mention— cool sunglasses automatically elevate any outfit!

FSA season is upon us! If you don’t use your Vision Benefits or FSA dollars by December 31st you may lose them.

What is FSA or HSA?
Flex Spending Accounts and Health Savings Accounts are pre-tax dollars set up for medical expenses. This includes eye exams, Rx glasses and contact lenses. Yay!

What are Vision Benefits?
Some employers have vision benefits as a part of their health benefits package. It typically covers your eye exam in full or with a small copay and a credit for glasses or contact lens materials. These benefits do not roll over and typically expire at the end of the calendar year. If you’re unsure if you have vision benefits—contact your HR department.

Book your eye exam early to avoid the end of the year rush 👀 🤓

If do not have either option, you can still come in for affordable eye care services. Yay!

See you soon,
Dr. Khela

Tools of the trade 👀 🤓

5 Reasons Why You Need A Yearly Eye Exam

1. 80% of learning occurs through vision. That means if your (or your child’s vision) is sub optimal, it could impact learning in school, processing information, lead to headaches and cause visual fatigue.

2. There’s other health problems that can be detected through an dilated eye exam - diabetes, hypertension, thyroid, MS, and more.

3. You can get fit for contact lenses for visual or cosmetic reasons. Glasses can help you see better but contacts can help with sports, traveling, and make you feel *hella fine* on those special occasions. Want to see what it feels like to have blue or green eyes? Schedule your visit with Dr. Khela.

4. Glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration are common age related diseases that can can be treated early.

5. Get a solid treatment plan for battling dry eye and computer vision syndrome. With the rise in screen time for all ages, you have to make sure you have the right eyewear for all the blue light from your screens!

What’s a low bridge fit, and why do you need it?

Low Bridge Fit frames are specially designed for those with low nose bridges (if the bridge of your nose sits level with or below the pupils), wide faces, and/or high cheekbones.

They keep frames from sliding down your nose, resting on your cheeks, or any pinching. Hello clear vision, bye bye to pushing your glasses up all day!

Come by and check out all the cool styles for your brand new prescription glasses 👀

Keep your superhero dad going strong all year long!

Dads are the ultimate superheroes, adventure seekers, tickle monsters and even sometimes the tooth fairy (shhhh). So it’s only fair they get a good treat on their special day! Here’s some tips to make Father’s Day super special and making sure dad is extra healthy this year.

1. Take them on a hike/ activity that involves getting that heat rate up. Cardiovascular exercise is important to keep the heart strong and healthy. Make sure dad is getting at least 30 min of exercise a day!

2. Lunch at a local mom and pop restaurant. Sure dads love to BBQ and grill, but sometimes it’s nice to sit down and unwind together. Make sure he’s getting enough veggies and greens to balance out the steak and red meat. A healthy diet with greens can reduce chances of heart disease and diabetes.

3. Schedule a yearly eye exam to get their vision checked and treat them to a custom pair of Rx sunglasses. Not only does UV protection help keep dad’s eyes healthy but it can improve their golf and fishing game ;)

Wishing all the dads, uncles and grandads a Happy Father’s Day! See you soon.

5 Tips To Keep Your Eyes Healthy All Summer:

1. Use 100% UV protection sunglasses to avoid UV damage. UV rays can be very harmful to sensitive parts of the eyes and cause cataracts, macular degeneration, pinguecula, and even sunburns to the eyes. Keep it fresh by having several pairs for different outfits.

2. Wear a hat! Not only does it look cool but it keeps more of the UV rays out of your eyes, and prevents wrinkles to the soft skin around your eyelids and forehead. Heading out for a run or summer hike? Grab a fitted cap or a wide brim hat.

3. Drink lots of water. Keep your eyes and body feeling hydrated with at least 2 liters of water, especially when you're outdoors and staying active.

4. Use lots of sunscreen on exposed skin, but avoid getting it in the eyes. The pH of creams, lotions, and make-up is vastly different from the eyes. There are ingredients that can cause your eyes to feel irritated if applied incorrectly.

5. Use goggles when swimming and avoid reusable contact lenses.. Reusable contact lenses are not safe because there can be harmful microbes like acanthomeba that live in water causing serious eye infections. Chlorine makes the eyes irritated and difficult to disinfect reusable contact lenses. Try a daily disposable contact and properly fitted goggles to avoid getting water in the eyes. Remove and dispose of the lenses immediately after swimming.
