Acupuncture for Depression: Is It Worth Trying? 08/11/2022

Why Acupuncture Is Going Mainstream in Medicine 06/06/2022

Why Acupuncture Is Going Mainstream in Medicine Here's what research says about the complementary therapy

01/05/2022

All of this!

You're supposed to be feeling tired right now, Nova Scotia.

For the past 20 months, your HPA Axis has been responding to what it thinks is a low level threat. So, your brain is sending more Corticotropic Releasing Hormone (CRH) towards your adrenal glands to create more cortisol to respond to this perceived threat.

(Perceived threat = respond in the same way as an actual threat... so, your body thinks you've been running away from a bear this entire time)

Over time, that increase in cortisol blunts a cell's ability to respond appropriately. This means that your body doesn't respond the way it's supposed to. It undeeresponds in a way. To respond, it requires a stronger signal to be sent. That's a similar feeling to being fine, and then all of sudden being very NOT fine.

Welcome to the party, adrenaline. An adrenaline response used to be bursting into tears because you got the wrong type of coffee, or your hair wouldn't curl right, or you missed an email and it felt like the end of the world. Let alone trying to decide what to eat.

But now you don't have a lot of adrenaline left. So now you just feel apathetic, you feel blah, you feel like you don't care.

But you do care.

And that separation is what we see in Burnout. And we blame ourselves and hold guilt because we think we shouldn't be feeling this way, that we should be grateful for what we have. And that guilt is holding you back.

You should be burnt out right now. Your system is responding exactly as it's physiologically supposed to do. Your body is trying to keep you alive.

So you need to remind your body that there is no threat.

💫Get your sleep, and prioritize it at all costs.
💫Take a piece of paper and write down EVERYTHING and have a friend or loved one help you prioritize. Focus on that first.
💫Engage in simple activities, ideally outside. You don't need to get caught up in the updates, you need to go for a walk.
💫Turn your phone on silent.
💫 Look at someone in the eye and tell them thank you.
💫 Eat some protein.
💫 Ask for help.
💫 Redefine success.

You're supposed to have emotions friend, you're a human. But those supports will help you feel more like yourself again.

Fire and Water. Humanity can not exist without these two elements.

These two elements are intimately connected in Chinese Medicine – known as the Fire/ Water or Heart/ Kidney axis. The stability of this axis is the very foundation of health, immunity and self-knowledge. If communication of the Heart/ Kidney axis is severed – often through trauma- any myriad of symptoms can arise from anxiety, agitation, dream disturbed sleep, insomnia, palpitations, poor memory, hearing problems, lower back pain, throat dryness, night sweats to urination changes. Acupuncture can help restore this connection and ultimately empower true healing, self-knowledge and innate purpose.

Taking Zinc Can Shorten Your Cold. Thank A 91-Year-Old Scientist For The Discovery 02/21/2020

Studies from the last several years show that some supplement containing zinc can help shorten the duration of cold symptoms by up to 40% — depending on the amount of the mineral in each dose and what it's combined with.

What it's combined with really matters! Zinc cold formulations sold at drugstores often contain multiple ingredients that can undercut the zinc's effectiveness. For instance, the lozenges "should not contain citric acid," Hemilä says, because it binds with the zinc in a way that keeps the mineral from being released.

Taking Zinc Can Shorten Your Cold. Thank A 91-Year-Old Scientist For The Discovery Dr. Ananda Prasad first turned up zinc's benefits to human growth back in the 1960s. Years later, his study and others found that the right dose of zinc can cut a cold's duration by days.

Chinese Medicine is everywhere! Each of the channels/ meridians has a color association. Most migraines in chinese medicine are associated with the Liver and Gallbladder meridian system. And it just so happens that this meridian corresponds to the color green. Pretty neat when ancient medicine can explain modern day findings!

If ‘Pain Is an Opinion,’ There Are Ways to Change Your Mind 12/06/2019

If ‘Pain Is an Opinion,’ There Are Ways to Change Your Mind.

One thing we tend to believe about pain, but is wrong, is that it always stems from a single, fixable source. Another is that pain is communicated from that source to our brains by “pain nerves.” That’s so wrong it’s called “the naïve view” by neuroscientists.

In truth, pain is in our brain. Or as the author and University of California, San Diego, neuroscientist V. S. Ramachandran put it, “Pain is an opinion.” We feel it because of how our brain interprets input transmitted to it from all our senses, not necessarily because of the inherent properties of the input itself. There are no nerves dedicated to sensing and transmitting pain.

If ‘Pain Is an Opinion,’ There Are Ways to Change Your Mind All pain is real, but it’s also true that it’s “made by the brain” and that we can exert some control over it.

A 'blue zones' diet: Live longer from what you eat 12/03/2019

If you want to live a long, healthy life, the key is to do the right things — and avoid the wrong things — for decades, not just a few months. Because when it comes to longevity, there's no short-term fix.

A 'blue zones' diet: Live longer from what you eat For most of their lives, the world's super-agers have nourished their bodies with whole, plant-based foods, such as leafy vegetables, tubers, nuts, beans and whole grains. And they ate meat fewer than five times monthly.
