ACADEMY OF SOO DO THAI
Now that the smoke has cleared, we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the team on a successful outing this past weekend!
The team brought back silver in the black belt forms division (out of a talent filled division of 13 competitors), and 2 golds and one silver in the always tough continuous sparring division!
We are tough, we are champions, we are SOO DO THAI!!!
Congrats team!
Congrats to Bailee, Melody, and Maddox on your stripe promotions! Keep up the good work!

The academy mourns a great loss as one of the most significant men to enter our academy has gone home to be with the lord, Robert "Bob" Carpenter.
We first came into contact with "Bob" roughly 19 years ago. His son (now one of our proud, strong, and accomplished Black Belts) Brandon Carpenter would often sneak up to the academy to peek through the windows while classes were in session. Eventually, he was noticed by the instructors and invited to sit in and watch classes. After watching a few classes, Brandon would dart out of the door and abruptly fade off into the neighborhood, only to return the following day. One day Brandon lost track of time and stayed at the academy longer than normal. A large burly man entered the academy scolding him (as he had been frantically searching for him), and Brandon scurried along with his dad and headed home. One would think that this would detour Brandon, but you would have to know him to know that isn't the case!
Brandon continued to return to the academy each day, and his father now knew where to find him. One day he came in and said something along the lines of "You really like this stuff huh"? Brandon vigorously nodded his head in approval, and Bob signed him up for classes without thought or hesitation. He said, "He is gonna be here anyway, so I may as well sign him up", lol. Bob knew that it was safer for him to be at the academy surrounded by positive and like-minded children than to be out in the streets. From that day forward, a relationship was born.
What many don't know is that Bob, in many ways, shaped the entire landscape of Soo Do Thai. He was an extremely talented man, capable of bringing my thoughts, visions, and dreams to reality. When Soo Do Thai first incorporated an MMA program into its curriculum, all training took place on the same mat as the karate program. I remember wanting a cage for the fighters to train in, however they were EXTREMELY expensive at that time, and way outside of the academy's budget. Bob said, "Why don't we just build one, it can't be that hard". I was in disbelief and didn't know where to start. He asked to come to one of the upcoming fights where our fighters were competing, and he slowly circled the cage after the show visually taking pictures and notes. He had a sly grin on his face and said "Okay, I think I can do it". Within a month Bob began constructing the cage and brought it in and assembled it. This was the birth of the MMA program and the multiple champions that it produced.
Bob then went on to build the boxing ring, and the bag rack for the hanging heavy bags used for training, all by hand. If that wasn't enough, he never complained or charged a single dime. ALL of his work and labor was a donation to the academy in appreciation for what it provided for his son (often times he provided the materials as well)! His contribution was not in lieu of his son's training expenses, but in addition to it. He also handled the maintenance and repairs for everything that he built, free of charge. He understood the value of what his son was receiving and wanted to contribute towards it.
In addition to building things, Bob never missed a function and would donate to EVERY ONE OF THEM. Car washes, in-house tournaments, picnics, banquets, you name it, Bob was there! He stood a very strong and proud man who never said much, but his presence filled the room.
Bob was the man who made my dreams come true. All I would have to do is mention it to him, and he never needed a drawing or much detail, he made it come to life. If it were not for him, there would be no MMA championships to celebrate or boxing and kickboxing wars to regale. This was all thanks to a man who loved his son enough to support both him and the academy in which he trained.
Thank you, Robert "Bob" Carpenter, for making our dreams come true. I believe that I can speak for the entire academy in saying that we love you, and you will be sorely missed by us all. It was a pleasure knowing you, and we thank you and your family for all that you have done and for all of the lives that you have helped, shaped, molded, and impacted through your generosity, hard work, and contributions. May God bless you and keep you and your family.
We love you. Rest In Peace.

Online Platform Returns!!!
The wait is finally over, the Soo Do Thai Online Platform has returned!!
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Time Constraints:
Each level times out after a certain number of months, therefore it is paramount that you finish the steps in a timely matter. The purpose of the platform is to encourage consistent rather than casual training (as you can train on your own time).
Attendance:
The platform works best with class participation. With work, school, and life, we do understand that not everyone can make it to class consistently. However, the platform, although comprehensive and extremely helpful, cannot answer real-time questions or correct errors in technique or performance, therefore it works better with class attendance. The ability to have an instructor (whether in person or virtually) observe your progress and give critique, pointers, and correction is invaluable, and goes a long way towards the practicing done via the online platform afterward. Therefore, students should understand that the online platform works hand in hand with class training.
If you find yourself struggling to make it to class, keep in mind that we offer training at least 4 days per week (2 days online, 2 days in-person training).
If your platform times out and you wish to review or continue, reach out to GrandMaster Gathings to be reinserted into the platform. Also, if you have any issues accessing or navigating the Online Portal, feel free to reach out as well!
Take advantage of this amazing training tool! It can be the difference maker in your next testing!!!
