PLEASE SEE THE RELEASE FROM THE TEAM AT LILLY LAKES ANS STREAMS.

⚠️ Caution ⚠️ Our Lilly Center research team investigated a toxic blue-green algae bloom in several channels at Big Chapman Lake this week.

With the upcoming holiday weekend, it is important to be informed and stay safe!

Our researchers conducted an analysis of microcystin, a blue-green algae toxin, and the lab results from water samples showed that the toxin level was over IDEM's threshold for pet and human safety.

Though the bloom has begun to dissipate, the toxins might linger, so we urge lake residents to stay out of the water in the Nelly's Bay channels where the toxin was found.

The main body of Big Chapman Lake had microcystin levels below the human and pet thresholds, but we still encourage lake residents to use caution and be on the lookout for signs of the bloom, such as a pea soup or oil spill-like appearance, and a bright blue or green color.

When in doubt, stay out!

If you spot a blue-green algae bloom or something you cannot identify, report it to the Lilly Center by emailing [email protected] or calling 574-372-5281.
