If we had to sum up the HARI Hindi School celebration last evening in one word, it was nothing short of extraordinary.

Day 9 : Goddess Siddhidatri
The last among the nine Avtar of Maa Durga, Maa Siddhidatri, is worshipped on the 9th day of Navaratri. This day is also known as Navami. Goddess Siddhidhatri is projected as a four-armed deity sitting calmly on a lotus. She also holds a lotus, mace, discus and a book. This form of Shakti signifies the ushering of knowledge and wisdom over ignorance. Siddhi in Sanskrit translates to accomplishment. Maa Siddhidatri grants Her devotees all sorts of achievements.
On the ninth day of Navrartris, devotees observe a fast and offer til or sesame seeds as bhog. The color of this day is peacock green; believed to fulfill the desires of devotees.
Day 8: Goddess Mahagauri
The eight day of Navratris is dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri. Also known as Ashtami, many people perform Kanjaks on this day. Mahagauri is worshiped as the four-armed deity who rides on a bull or a white elephant. She carries a trishul and a damru. Radiant and compassionate, Maa Maugauri is usually depicted in a white or green saari and riding a bull.
Mahagauri is offered coconut as bhog by devotees. The color of the day is purple, signifies the power of intellect and peace.
Day 7: Goddess Kaalratri
This 7th day of Navratri is also called as Saptami. According to the Hindu scriptures, Goddess Kaalratri is etched as a four-armed deity who rides a donkey. She carries a sword, a trident and a noose. She is the fierce form of Durga, dark and ferocious in appearance. She possesses three eyes on her forehead that are known to contain the entire universe. She breathes fierce flames of fire, and lustrous rays emanate from her. Here, Kaal means time and death and Kaalratri means the One who is the Death of Kaal.
Devotees offer jaggery or sweets made with jaggery. The color of the seventh day is grey, a color which stands for the strength of transforming.
Day 6: Goddess Katyayani
Worshiped on the sixth day (Shashti) of Navratris, Goddess Katyayani is a form of Shakti who is depicted as having four arms, and carrying a sword. She rides a lion, and can be pleased with true devotion and piety. She is the daughter of Sage Katyayan. Also known as the warrior goddess, Katyayani is considered as one of the most violent forms of Goddess Parvati.
The colour of the sixth day is Green and signifies new beginnings and growth. Devotees offer Honey as prasad to Devi Katyayani.
Day 5: Goddess Skandmata
Goddess Skandmata is worshipped on the fifth day also known as Panchami. Skandmata is a four-armed deity, who carries a lotus in two of her arms with a sacred Kamandalu and a bell in the other two. the 5th manifestation of Goddess Durga and the mother of Lord Kartikeya, who was chosen by the devatas as their commander in chief in the war against the demons. She also carries a little Kartikeya on her lap and because of this Kartikeya is also known as Skanda. She is seated on a lotus.
Her posture is calm and serene. She is seated on a lotus, but a lion is also her vehicle. She is also worshiped in the form of Parvati, Maheshwari or Mata Gauri. The left arm of the goddess is in a pose to grant boons with grace to her devotees.
The color associated is yellow.The color stands for happiness and brightness. A bhog of bananas is offered to the goddess.
Day 4: Goddess Kushmanda
Maa Kushmanda, the fourth Avatar of Goddess Durga, is worhipped on this day. Her name Kushmanda is made of three other words ‘Ku' (little), ‘Ushma' (warmth or energy) and ‘Amnda' (egg) which means the one who created the universe as the “Little Cosmic Egg” with energy and warmth. She has eights hands in which she holds Kamandul, bow, arrow, a jar of nectar (Amrit), discus, mace and a lotus, and in one hand she holds a rosary which blesses her devotees with the Ashtasiddhis and Navniddhis. She is also known as Ashtabhuja. She has a radiant face and golden body complexion.
Devotees offer Malpua to Maa Kushmanda. The color of the this day is royal blue. This color is considered good for health and wealth.
Day 3: Goddess Chandraghanta.
The third manifestation of Durga is Goddess Chandraghanta. She is depicted as a fierce 10-armed Goddess, roaring in anger.
She has a golden complexion and on her forehead she wears a crescent moon, which is why she is called Chandraghanta. According to scriptures during a great battle between gods and the demons, the sound vibrations produced by her ghanta (bell) took the lives of many wicked enemies. Maa Chandraghanta has three eyes and ten hands holding ten types of swords, weapons and arrows. She rides on a lion and is believed to destroy all evil and wicked.
The ferocious goddess is pleased with Kheer. The color dedicated is red which signifies beauty and fearlessness.
Day 2: Goddess Brahmacharini
The second day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Brahmacharini. She is depicted as a monastic goddess, is extremely radiant and majestic. She is two-armed, clad in white and walks bare feet with a rudraksh mala in one hand and a sacred Kamandalu in the other. Her stance is of utmost piety and devotion. She is also known as Tapasyacharini.
Devotees serve a bhog of sugar and fruits to Goddess Brahmacharini. White is the color dedicated to this goddess which is a symbol of peace and purity.
