Tokyo Film Market to remain virtual for third year

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Tiffcom runs parallel to Tokyo International Film Festival.

Tiffcom, the content market that runs alongside Tokyo International Film Festival, will take place as an online-only event for the third consecutive year from October 25-27.

Organisers confirmed the move today (June 23), which reflects Japan’s cautious reopening of its borders in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, Tokyo International Film Festival has committed to return as a fully physical event from October 24 to November 2.

Tiffcom first went virtual in 2020 due to the pandemic but its decision to remain online for a third year comes as other film markets and festivals return to in-person events.

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

After two years of hybrid and online-only editions, the Neuchatel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival will fête its 21st year with a return to a fully on-site event, hosting four world premieres, and more than twice as many international premieres.

Running July 1-9, the Swiss event will world premiere the absurdist “Jaws”-in-France riff “The Year of the Shark,” the Thai creature feature “Leio,” and the Japanese Yakuza thriller “Bad City.” Titles like the Toho-produced Kaiju flick “Shin Ultraman,” “Something in the Dirt” from U.S. horror maestros Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and Léa Mysius’ “The Five Devils” will mark their international berths at Nifff – the latter as the festival’s opening film.

This blackjack edition will also mark the first year under the direction of Pierre-Yves Walder, a Nifff veteran whose involvement with the lakefront festival dates back some time. After a stint in the press office, years as a programmer,

The conference will form the centrepiece of the festival’s industry programme.

‘Lamya’s Poem’ Trailer Details Rumi-Inspired Syrian Refugee Tale (Exclusive)

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Long-awaited animated feature “Lamya’s Poem” has unveiled its first trailer.

Alex Kronemer’s Rumi-inspired film about a Syrian refugee girl named Lamya was one of the hot competition titles at the 2021 Annecy Film Festival, and went on to play at festivals in Vancouver, Zurich and Prague.

The film is an inspiring and timely tale about a 12-year-old Syrian refugee who flees the violence of her country, and looks to a gifted book of poetry by the famous 13th-century poet, Rumi, as a source of strength. As the perils of her journey mount, the book becomes a magical gateway where she meets Rumi when he was a boy and also a refugee fleeing the violence of his time. In a shared dreamworld, they battle the monsters that follow them from their real world situations, and Lamya must help young Rumi find his calling and write the poem that, 800 years later,

Nifff Tackles LGBTQ+ Representation With Scream Q***r Retrospective

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Heading into his first edition at the helm of the Neuchatel Intl. Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff), artistic director Pierre-Yves Walder looked to land his white whale, setting his sights on a retrospective idea he’d dreamed up many years before.

“In concrete terms, I’ve wanted to do this ever since I first applied to the festival,” Walder says of Scream Q***r, a pet project that reflects on Lgbtiq+ representation through the lens of the fantastic. “I wanted to explore social elements through genre, which has always been a mirror for society, a place to express certain unmentionable ideas in abstract, using metaphor to explore subjects off limits in more direct approaches.”

Showcasing 15 films curated by Walder and his team and another four selected by The xx singer Oliver Sim, this year’s centerpiece retrospective brings together camp items like “Nightmare on Elm Street II,” cult classics like the Wachowski

Thailand scraps tax on foreign actors to boost international production

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Law on taxing performers has been the subject of a long campaign.

Foreign actors will soon be exempt from taxation for work in Thailand following a move by the government to boost international production in the country.

The Thai cabinet passed the law on Tuesday (June 22) with the new measure valid for five years and expected to come into effect within the next three months.

All employees in Thailand are subject to a withholding tax, which varies by occupation and nationality: 5 for Thai performers and 10 for foreign performers. The tax is based on where the work is performed, not where they are paid.

White Pine Pictures’ Andrew Munger Relaunches Ultramagnetic Productions (Exclusive)

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

White Pine Pictures executive Andrew Munger has re-launched his outfit Ultramagnetic Productions with a slate of drama and documentary projects.

Munger first operated Ultramagnetic Productions from 1997 to 2004, producing non-fiction projects including “Walmart Nation,” “Campaign: The Making of a Candidate,” “Xanadu: In Search of Domestic Perfection” and “Make Some Noise!” for networks such as the CBC, Discovery, History and Life/Slice. He shuttered the company in 2005 to run television production at World Vision, Canada’s largest non-profit organization, before moving to Toronto’s White Pine Pictures in 2014.

After eight years, Munger is stepping down from his role as director of unscripted development at White Pine in order to restart Ultramagnetic.

However, he will continue as an executive producer on several key White Pine feature documentaries, including “Buffy Sainte Marie: Carry It On” (Bell/PBS) and “The Con: Churchill and Roosevelt Secret American War” (Super Channel/Wnet/Arte/Beyond Rights). The latter

Post your questions for Dougray Scott

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Got something you’d like to ask the Mission: Impossible and Deep Impact actor? Send it our way and we’ll put it to him

There’s aren’t many actors who can put “hand picked by Tom Cruise” on their CV. Scottish actor Dougray Scott was personally cast by Tc to play rogue Impossible Missions Force agent and chief bad guy in 2000’s Mission: Impossible II – famous for that Cruise/Scott motorbike fighting scene. It’s a role that propelled the Twin Town and Deep Impact actor to international fame, even if it did mean he lost the role of Wolverine for 2000’s X-Men (to Hugh Jackman) after filming on MI2 overran. Scott was also apparently in the running to take over Bond in 2006’s Casino Royale, but was pipped to the post by Daniel Craig.

But let’s not worry about all that. This is a safe, happy

Rambo: First Blood review – Stallone’s 80s hero ripe for devotees of old-school action

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Fans of movie explosions get another chance to spend time with the character that inspired Ronald Reagan

Forty years on, here’s a rerelease of the first movie in the Rambo series from 1982: the watchable if entirely preposterous exploitation-action picture in which star and co-writer Sylvester Stallone makes his first appearance as John Rambo, the decorated Green Beret, Vietnam veteran and commando übermensch in a permanent rage at the way he and his fellow soldiers were let down. It climaxes with an entirely bizarre speech from Rambo on the subject of his Ptsd, delivered in Stallone’s unintelligible slurred drone: “Igghh sawfff bodyghhh partghhs everyghrhwhere…!”

This was actually the film that came before the one that made Rambo a real movie icon, Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), where he has to go back to Vietnam for a fantasy replay of the war on the grounds that he is searching

‘Murder at Yellowstone City’ Review: A Well-Crafted Mix of Traditional Western and Murder Mystery Elements

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

The first tip-off is the title: “Murder at Yellowstone City” is not your standard-issue shoot-’em-up. Rather, director Richard Gray’s well-crafted and handsomely mounted indie is as much a solidly constructed mystery as it is it a conventionally satisfying oater, with much to recommend to fans of either genre who rarely get to sample such a mix. Indeed, outside of Henry Hathaway’s “Five Card Stud” (1968) and the lamentably short-lived 2003 TV series “Peacemakers,” it’s hard to recall many other scenarios that suggest what might have resulted had Zane Grey and Agatha Christie bellied up to the bar and swapped ideas.

Only gradually does it emerge that Thomas Jane’s Thaddeus Murphy is the sagebrush sleuth of the piece, as his character — prodded by Anna Camp as Alice, his astute wife and partner — demonstrates surprising pathological skills while attempting to prove the innocence of a suspected killer. Surprising, that is,

Tokyo Film Market to Stay in Online Mode for Third Year

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Tiffcom, the affiliated market of Tokyo International Film Festival, will remain as an online only event for the third year. It will run for three days, Oct. 25-27, 2022, in parallel with the early part of the film festival.

The Tokyo market’s decision to stay as an exclusively virtual event comes at a time when film and TV markets and festivals in other countries are returning to in-person meetings after the Covid-19 pandemic. And it reflects Japan’s caution in reopening the country to foreign visitors.

In recent weeks, Japan said that it will again welcome foreign tourists. But these are currently restricted to organized tour groups, not individual travelers, and visitors must wear masks at all times in public.

The Tokyo festival is planning to hold physical events in the Hibiya-Ginza-Yurakucho-Marunouchi area where it moved last year after years being centered in the Roppongi district.

They/Them Teaser: Kevin Bacon Returns To The Summer Camp Slasher Genre

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

You can take the boy out of the camp slasher, but you can't take the camp slasher out of the boy. Kevin Bacon was a young star on the rise when he booked a sweet gig in a little low-budget horror movie about a bunch of h***y camp counselors setting up for camping season on the traditionally unlucky date of Friday the 13th. The rest is history! Bacon found mainstream success shortly thereafter, but to his credit hasn't shied away from horror in the years since, appearing in stuff like "Tremors," "Hollow Man," and "Stir of Echoes." But now he's going back to camp in this...

https://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

When audiences were first introduced to Buzz Lightyear in "Toy Story," he was a toy spaceman based on the star of a hit sci-fi movie in-universe. "Lightyear" is that movie. If that's too much ridiculousness to process, just pretend that Buzz Lightyear is Han Solo and Andy got a Han Solo action figure for his birthday after seeing "Star Wars" and it became his favorite new movie. Does that make sense? Movie gods, I sure hope it does.

Of course, as "Lightyear" is a Disney movie ripe for merchandising, there's no way they weren't going to make toys based...

It looks like "Titanic" is the latest film to get the big-screen 3D remaster treatment. We've heard that "Jaws" will be hitting IMAX screens this September in a post-converted 3D experience and "Et" will also be re-released, although not in 3D.

Deadline reports that the aim is for "Titanic" to hit screens next Valentine's day in celebration of the film's 25th anniversary. Not so coincidentally, this is just a couple of months after the release of James Cameron's "Avatar" sequel, which will be utilizing much of the same projection tech.

This "Titanic" re-release will screen in 3D 4K Hdr and high frame rate (Hfr). In...
