Russian troops inch forward in Ukraine's east with waves of bombs and infantry The push is fueling a surge in fleeing civilians.

In Ukraine, when a missile or artillery shell hits, roofs and windows are blown out of the surrounding houses. Our goal is to quickly rebuild and get people back in their homes before winter. The motto for our initiative with East Sos (Схід SOS): “Fast, Effective, Inexpensive.”

Russian capture of Avdiivka prompts departure of elderly in nearby towns Russia's capture of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine has alarmed people in nearby towns and many are now leaving for safer areas after hunkering down for months from constant hostile fire.

Today we went to one of six safe spaces for women and children located in Kropivnitsky, Ukraine. These locations are set up and operated throughout the country by our partner Each location has a teacher, lawyer, psychologist and full-time staff providing much-needed services to internally displaced women and their children. February 9 started with a discussion on the humanitarian situation in the Zaporizhzhya region with theDeputy of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Council. Oksana and Denis from Vostok SOS also participated in the discussion. This meeting was held within 20 miles of the front line with Russia.

Passing through a checkpoint leaving Zaporizhzhia, we noticed a trend seen at other checkpoints around the country. There is always national police alongside soldiers. When asked why that was, Oksana Kuiantseva, Board Member of Vostok SOS, said the soldiers are not allowed to search civilian vehicles. We congratulated them for upholding democratic traditions even in a war zone.
After, Sean Kennedy of .sos.usa met with Svitlana Tyschenko, head of Petro-Mykhailivka Hromada of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Today, Vostok SOS successfully evacuated Galina and her five grandchildren from Yasne Village near Liman.
