Our next Alumni Spotlight is Second Lieutenant Higuma! Thank you so much for sharing your insight with us and for continuously representing Det 130!
Where are you from?
San Jose, California
What school did you graduate from?
George Washington University
What is your AFSC?
31P, Security Forces Officer
Where are you currently stationed?
Moody AFB, GA
Please provide a quick summary of your job and its importance.
I am currently a Flight Commander in command of 72 Airmen within the 820th Base Defense Group (BDG). The BDG is a unique Security Forces (SF) unit who's home station mission is solely to train for air base defense operations down-range. The BDG regularly sends Airmen to Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger, and Pathfinder schools, which allows us to operate in austere environments that normal SF units cannot operate in. We are also the only Security Forces unit that can be ready within 72-96 hours to deploy in support of DOD Immediate Response Force taskings.
Why did you desire to have this AFSC?
I have always been interested in infantry operations, law enforcement, etc., so when it came time to compile my dream sheet, I listed Security Forces as my top choice and got it.
What is your biggest lesson learned from Det 130?
Delegation! When I was a cadet, I served as the Cadet Vice Wing Commander and learned relatively quickly that delegation is one of the most important elements of leadership, especially when you are in charge of a lot of people. I brought this concept onto Active Duty and I definitely recommend practicing it if you are put into a leadership role as a cadet.
What are your plans after your Air Force career?
I plan on finishing my 4 year service commitment and transitioning into civilian law enforcement.
Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Det 130!! We hope everyone has a restful break, see you soon!
CDI was a success! We can’t thank the planners, special guests, and cadets who made the event so special enough. It was a night full of funny skits, inspiring words, and plenty of grog. We’ll see you all after Thanksgiving Break!
Today we stand in respect for our nation’s veterans. We know it is only because of their service and sacrifice that we are free. Take the time today to thank veterans across the country for their heroism!
Det 130 cadets thank our Cadre for their service to their country and for their dedication to training the futures officers of the Air Force.
And we’d like to also shout out our Honor Guard for their performance at American University’s Veteran’s Day event today!
Our first Alumni Spotlight of the semester is Lieutenant Colonel Carpenter! This Howard University graduate has taken the time to answer some questions we wanted Det 130 cadets to reflect on!
What is your AFSC?
I have multiple AFSCs…63A (Acquisitions), 16F (Foreign Area Officer), 64P (Contracting), and I did a brief tour in 38F (Force Support). It’s been an honor to diversify my leadership experience in multiple career fields and with the joint and interagency communities.
Please provide a quick summary of your job and its importance.
I’m currently serving as the Branch Chief and Program Element Monitor for the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) Enterprise. The Space Force is responsible for operating and maintaining the GPS satellite constellation for billions of users worldwide, and my office oversees the GPS enterprise on behalf of the Secretary of the Air Force (and the DoD more broadly). GPS is not only essential to the armed forces, but perhaps has an even greater influence on modern life and the global economy. GPS technology is used in everything from cell phones and watches, to bulldozers, shipping containers, and ATMs. Moreover, GPS boosts productivity across an array of industries to include farming, construction, mining, surveying, package delivery, transportation, and logistical supply chain management. Additionally, major communications networks, banking systems, financial markets, power grids, and emergency and rescue services depend heavily on GPS for precise time and location synchronization.
What is your biggest lesson learned from Det 130?
I’m forever grateful to the cadre and my fellow Det-mates for believing in me more than I did myself; I credit my success in ROTC and beyond, in part, to them. As I look back, perhaps the most important lessons coming out of Det 130 for me were 1) Having positive influences around you matters—whether it be family, friends, mentors, or colleagues. They can often see you in ways you can’t—heed their support and encouragement; 2) Don’t be bound by the limits that others (or society) place upon you; chase your passions and challenge yourself—the only limitation is you
Last weekend, Det 130 dominated in paintball! The experience was said to be “painful”, invigorating, and a definite must-try-again. Congratulations to the green team for their win!

“I was selected for an internship to analyze and develop algorithms to calculate the effects of tactical nuclear weapons deployments at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, California for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Then I was sent to Amman, Jordan for advanced Arabic language study within the Flagship program where I met with American diplomats in Amman and practiced conducting discussions and lectures on everything from renewable energy and womens rights to nuclear proliferation. It was an amazing, extremely educational summer and I learned a lot.”
