Changing Clinical Practice: Discussing the New ABM Mastitis Protocol

as she leads us in a discussion about the new - Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Clinical Protocol #36: The Mastitis Spectrum, Revised 2022

The new protocol:
Addresses abscess, blebs, engorgement, galactoceles, mastitis, phlegmons, and "plugged ducts" as all part of the same spectrum of inflammation in the breast.
Reveals that "plugging" doesn't exist. Ducts in the breast are innumerable and interlacing and it is not possible for a single duct to become obstructed with a macroscopic (large) milk "plug".
Suggests that antibiotic use is rarely required to resolve inflammatory mastitis.

The scholarship also includes a one-year membership to the Tri-State Breastfeeding Association.
