All students deserve an education free from discrimination and harassment. AAUW stands with over 80 organizations opposing H.J.Res.165, which would weaken #TitleIX protections for survivors of sexual harassment and assault, pregnant and parenting students, and LGBTQI+ students. Last week, the District of Columbia honored the late Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee, MD, (d. 1980) with a street renamed in her honor. Dr. Ferebee was a member of the AAUW DC branch, and AAUW CEO Gloria L. Blackwell attended the renaming ceremony to give remarks about our distinguished member’s legacy. The great-granddaughter of enslaved people, Dr. Ferebee broke barriers as a doctor who helped Black communities access healthcare during Jim Crow and was a relentless advocate for women’s rights. Her journey and successes exemplify the power of determination against all odds. It was said of Dr. Ferebee, “She was a role model for me and all the other young women who wanted to do things in the world but needed encouragement to believe they could.” Thank you to the Ferebee family for inviting AAUW to share in this celebration. With the unveiling of Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee Way, let us all unveil a strengthened commitment to advancing equity for all women and girls! On the anniversary of the Dobbs decision, one of our Policy Interns, Saoirse, speaks at the Right to Abortion Rally from the @youngfeministparty. Her compelling speech draws from personal experience navigating abortion and contraception resources in college. Saoirse highlights the challenges students face and emphasizes the critical need for publishing the Equal Rights Amendment. Her insights offer a powerful perspective on reproductive rights in higher education.

Hey, CNN! Mothers are losing $18K/year due to pay inequity. Ask the candidates how they’ll fix it. Tag CNN, CNN Politics, Jake Tapper , and Dana Bash and tell them to ask about pay equity during the presidential debate. Being underpaid 26 cents on the dollar means mothers working full time, year-round lose out on $18,000/year. That $18,000 could have paid for 9 months of rent, 5 months of groceries, AND three months of childcare. How will the next president close the gender pay gap? #DontShortchangeWomen #WomenAreTheEconomy #payequity #ᴠᴏᴛᴇ2024

VICTORY: The Supreme Court has UNANIMOUSLY rejected the anti-abortion extremist attempt to restrict access to the medication mifepristone. Being able to choose if and when to become a parent improves women’s well-being and fosters economic security. Without access to reproductive freedom, there can be no equity.

The #motherhoodpenalty costs women about $16,000 a year in lost wages. Women shouldn’t be shortchanged for having kids. The good news is the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) takes a great step towards ensuring working moms are supported on the job. The recently released final PWFA rules go into effect on June 18, 2024. But there’s still more to be done. Millions of mothers don’t have paid time off, meaning staying home to care for a sick child could jeopardize their job or family income. Help advance gender equity and ask Congress to pass the FAMILY Act: https://act.aauw.org/44MCRax
