How will candidates tackle the student debt crisis hitting women hardest? Higher ed costs soar while degrees become vital for jobs. Women, especially Black women and student mothers, face higher debt. Upon graduation, gender pay and racial wealth gaps make repayment tougher. This impacts women's ability to afford childcare, buy homes, start businesses, or save for the future.
Ask your candidates for solutions!

Did you know? The U.S. Constitution doesn't explicitly guarantee gender equality. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) aims to change that. Already ratified by 3/4 of states, the ERA would constitutionally ensure true legal equality for all, regardless of gender. Ask your candidates: What's their stance on the ERA?

Last week, the District of Columbia honored the late Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee, MD, (d. 1980) with a street renamed in her honor. Dr. Ferebee was a member of the AAUW DC branch, and AAUW CEO Gloria L. Blackwell attended the renaming ceremony to give remarks about our distinguished member’s legacy.
The great-granddaughter of enslaved people, Dr. Ferebee broke barriers as a doctor who helped Black communities access healthcare during Jim Crow and was a relentless advocate for women’s rights. Her journey and successes exemplify the power of determination against all odds. It was said of Dr. Ferebee, “She was a role model for me and all the other young women who wanted to do things in the world but needed encouragement to believe they could.”
Thank you to the Ferebee family for inviting AAUW to share in this celebration. With the unveiling of Dorothy Celeste Boulding Ferebee Way, let us all unveil a strengthened commitment to advancing equity for all women and girls!

Hey, CNN!
Nearly 65 million women ages 25-54 — your most coveted demographic — participate in the U.S. workforce. Our pay equity is a key economic issue.
Women are the most powerful consumers in the U.S. We buy on behalf of people in our households and beyond. We move markets. We ARE the market.
And we vote. In every presidential election since 1980, the proportion of eligible women who voted has eclipsed the proportion of eligible men who voted. When women vote, we change the conversation.
So, CNN, America's women and AAUW will be watching tonight to see if you believe it’s important to ask the presidential candidates about pay equity. Don’t let us down.

The gender pay gap varies widely by state, from women earning $18,877 less than men in Wyoming to $3,872 less in Vermont. Women also receive 20% LESS in Social Security benefits than men, and that gap is projected to persist until 2056, according to the Center for American Progress.
Women have spoken — we're done being shortchanged. CNN, you must ask the candidates if they'll support federal legislation to close the gender pay gap. Forbes Center for American Progress

* Latina women, 52 cents
* Black women, 66 cents
* Asian American women, 89 cents
* Native American women, 59 cents

Being underpaid 26 cents on the dollar means mothers working full time, year-round lose out on $18,000/year. That $18,000 could have paid for 9 months of rent, 5 months of groceries, AND three months of childcare. How will the next president close the gender pay gap? #ᴠᴏᴛᴇ2024
On this Dobbs v. Jackson anniversary, we reflect on another year without constitutional protection for access to abortion. AAUW reaffirms our commitment to reproductive freedom and calls on supporters to demand that our elected officials defend the right for a woman to make decisions around abortion care on her terms, with dignity and support and without government interference. It's time to demand real change from our leaders. Join us in calling on Congress to Pass the Women’s Health Protection Act!

Title IX is a groundbreaking law which prohibits s*x discrimination in education. New rules issued in April, restore students’ protections against s*xual harassment, affirm protections for LBGTQ+ students, strengthen supports for pregnant and parenting students. AAUW opposes congressional efforts to roll back the new rules.

Underpaying women and undervaluing their work not only
hurts women and their families — it damages the entire U.S. economy. Strengthening the economy starts with paying
women fairly.

In the 2020 presidential debates, 37,174 words were spoken — but the word "women" was said only 6 times. The economic issue of pay equity was never discussed. America's women are being shortchanged. Demand CNN ask the candidates how they'll close the gender pay gap in the June 27 presidential debate.

VICTORY: The Supreme Court has UNANIMOUSLY rejected the anti-abortion extremist attempt to restrict access to the medication mifepristone.
