Voting goes live on February 26th for active members! Meet Kayla Brock, a third-year student running for Co-President.
"A Little About Me: Hello Everyone! My name is Kayla Brock and I am a Junior studying Political Science with minors in International Affairs and Journalism & Mass Communications. You may recognize me from our LinkedIn Workshops, Org Fairs, or any of the letter writing and phone banking events that we have hosted this year. Besides LWT, I am a Community & Engagement intern for this semester at EMILY's List and am incredibly passionate about upholding the values of LWT that encourage women that they can run for office and their narrative is enough. In addition, I am also involved in a variety of other campus organizations such as an Events Assistant for GW Program Board and the Partnership & Coalitions Director at Swing Left GW.
My LWT Experience: I have served as both the Treasurer and Secretary of LWT since its founding during my sophomore year. While these may sound like periphery roles within the organization and not a natural step towards the presidency, I think that it has only prepared me further for the role. I have a lot of knowledge about how the budget works and that has allowed me to take the lead on our upcoming projects like building the website and creating merchandise for our members. My role as Secretary has also given me extensive experience in the administrative and communicative roles required for the presidency. I have been the person making the newsletter and the person curating the budget so I know how to lead and offer guidance to those who will be new to the role. I have headed up projects that have outsized my roles such as recruiting speakers for both our Career Excellence Panel and our upcoming Gen Z Activism Panel. I also created our Women in Politics Video Campaign where we reached out to women running for public office to create a video on why women's representation in public office is so important. Voting goes live on February 26th for active members! Meet Nina Plateroti, a first-year student running for Secretary. "Over the past year, I have served as one of the freshman representatives for GWULWT and it has been such an amazing experience. Not only have I had the joy of getting to know and work with amazing women, but I have also grown in my ability to effectively communicate, organize and collaborate as a member of E-Board. I want to continue to learn and grow alongside this organization and work to further its message within the GW community and the larger DMV area. I truly believe in the goals of GW Leading Women of Tomorrow and have seen the positive impact it has had on so many young women, including myself. I want to continue aiding in its advancement as Secretary of GW Leading Women of Tomorrow. For the past year and a half, I have also served as Secretary of my local League of Women Voters, which has given me the experience of handling correspondances with members and taking minutes during meetings, both of which are skills that would serve me well as Secretary of GWULWT. I plan on dedicating my career to bridging the gender gap in public representation as a lawyer and advocate and GWULWT is the perfect place to be as a student committed to the empowerment of women."
Voting goes live on February 26th for active members! Meet Ivy Trocco, a second-year student running for Treasurer. "I have been treasurer in other clubs that I have been on eboard for at my old university and found the position very meaningful. I am a very organized person and I am extremely good with numbers. I know how budgeting spreadsheets and programs work. I would love a chance to work with this club and help women at GW become leaders."
Voting goes live on February 26th for active members! Meet Madeline Ley, a first-year student running for Director of Public Affairs. Hi everyone! My name is Madeline Ley, and I am a freshman double majoring in Political Science and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I currently serve as one of the two GWU LWT Freshman Representatives. Empowering women is very important, and that’s what I spend a lot of my time trying to do. Aside from serving as the Freshman Representative, I am working a media and communications internship that provides financial support and information to women, and I also serve as the Gender Equality Ambassador for a local Miami non-profit called Social Impact Movement. Additionally, I started an initiative called Shrink the Gap that seeks to empower young women to fight the wage gap through effective salary negotiation skills and public advocacy. Through Shrink the Gap, I have given salary negotiation workshops to dozens of young women in Miami-Dade County, and have personally spoken to Miami’s first women mayor Daniella Levine-Canva, Congresswoman Donna Shalala, and to the Miami-Dade Community Disparities Subcommittee about the gender pay gap on the local and state level. I want to serve as Public Affairs Chair for GW LWT because I want to take initiative in spreading LWT’s message and impact through digital advocacy and marketing. Most importantly, I want a position in the E-Board because the world needs more women in public office and I want to participate in making change. Feel free to check out my most recent Instagram posts on @ShrinktheGap to see some of my work!
