Dr. Dierdra Chester is a @usdagov Director of the Office of the Chief Scientist and proud @fiuinstagram @fiustempel alumni! She shares a big-picture overview of what she does to lead at USDA, from improving its research integrity to new bio-based research initiatives. Dr. Chester is also a strong proponent of mentorship and a wholehearted believer that mentoring the next generation is the key to a successful future, giving back to her community and school to foster more future leaders.

We had a successful infrastructure week; @fiuextreme and @fiu_ cec sponsored the opening reception of United 4 Infrastructure; faculty and student leadership visited DC to advocate during infrastructure week and had a conversation with @commisheileen @fiuenvironment gathered its partners from all over the nation for the Research Coordination Network for Hurricane Ecosystem Response Synthesis, and the @gableschamber came to the nation’s capital to dialogue with SBA officials. Meanwhile, the @miami_ chamber visited DC to advocate and was part of the Climate Ready Tech Hub. Later on, we hosted our first summertime rooftop reception, and @fiupresident Jessel was there to enjoy it with us. #pawsup #impactmatters

Federal officials tour the FIU Climate Technologies Lab. Willard Shepard @willardshepardlawandmedia and @FIU_Law Alumni were sworn into the U.S. Supreme Court Bar. The @FIUmedicine College of Medicine Fly-In Cohort visited to research policy challenges in healthcare. @bsufiu Fly-In students discuss media, policy, and culture for black history month. Lastly, FIU joined the Miami Delegation @dadedelegation to launch the Congressional Cafecito Challenge, so stay tuned to see who will win the competition on 305 Day!!!

Back in Miami, FIU students and faculty hosted the @usdagov Deputy Secretary, Xochitl Torres Small, and @nrcgov. Renaldine LeFleche @iabpia and FIU hosted their annual @lafoundation workshop. Last week at FIU in DC: #Everglades research took center stage as students and faculty engaged in advocacy and dialogue. Notable highlights included alumni Andrea Piccardo’s appointment at the Department of Energy (@energy), a National Science Dialogue with key partners, and a visit from the @fiuenvironment“Future of Everglades Fly-In” participants that engaged in networking and learning opportunities. Advocacy efforts extended to #CapitolHill, a Task Force meeting at @usinterior, and policy proposals were crafted and presented during the Everglades’ trip. Also, @fiu_sipa students participated in the Israel March, and special visits included the @talbertcypress from the @miccosukeetribeofindians ! We hosted a movie night featuring @natgeo’s “Path of Panther” with producer @torilinder. That was a week full of engagement and impact here in DC! #EvergladesAdvocacy
