On Friday, our Florida International University interns started their semester off strong by learning presidential lessons from the George Washington Leadership Institute at George Washington's Mount Vernon.
Guest speakers provided our interns with essential tools for their semester in Washington, D.C., from smart networking to making decisions under pressure like our first President. Representing FIU, the Fall 2024 and friends from Capitol Hill discussed career insights and techniques on navigating D.C. for the first time.

Exciting news out of D.C. this morning! Earlier today, released their 2024 National University Rankings, making FIU the highest-ranked university in Florida. 🎓
This achievement affirms how we are fulfilling our mission, advancing science, and making the world a better place right along with elite institutions such as , , and . 🐆

in 1992, made landfall in South Florida. Shortly thereafter, students at Mays Middle School worked with artists to create a 48-foot mural of their experience to “give a face to the faceless storm.”
The ‘Love Can Build Anything’ mural was quickly used as a backdrop for a Presidential Town Meeting in Homestead, FL, where President Bill Clinton and then-First Lady Hillary Clinton spoke to the public and signed the mural live on TV to signify a commitment to volunteerism.
Today, part of the mural stands on display in FIU in Washington, D.C.’s office as a testament to the resilience of South Florida. As we reflect on this piece of history, we are reminded of the enduring impact that collective action and compassion can have in rebuilding and strengthening our communities.
32 years after , Florida International University stands as the global leader in hurricane research, resilience, and safety, pioneering innovations that protect lives and strengthen communities.
The International Hurricane Research Center, home to the original Wall of Wind, was established using funds from the We Will Rebuild Foundation in the direct aftermath of Andrew. Since then, FIU Extreme Events Institute has remained fully committed to developing solutions and forging partnerships to keep South Florida ready and resilient.
This year, FIU achieved groundbreaking milestones for a more secure future. With the support of our congressional representatives and, the Wall of Wind secured over $4 million for facility and research upgrades, and a brand-new ClimateReady Tech Hub was announced, with FIU taking a leading role.
🌟Earlier this month, one of FIU’s Department of Earth and Environment professors, Dr. Assefa Melesse, met with to discuss how science can inform policy in our nation’s capital.
🏛️Dr. Melesse is a member of the National Academies’ 2023-24 Jefferson Science Fellows, and he serves as a Senior Climate and Environment Fellow in the Office of Subnational Diplomacy Unit at the Department of State.
📝As Secretary Blinken wrote on social media, “In this fast-paced world, science and technology are essential components of U.S. foreign policy.” We couldn’t agree more!

Florida International University, FIU College of Engineering and Computing, StartUPFIU, FIU Extreme Events Institute was awarded $10M to lead on Infrastructure technologies.
Just last month, Assistant Secretary Alejandra Y. Castillo visited with Miami-Dade County Government, Florida International University and many partners at our Wall of Wind to announce new investments in South Florida. Other partners include the University of Miami, FAU, Miami-Dade College and over 40 others.
The group led by Florida International University will lead Accelerate the readiness and expand deployment of Climate-friendly cement technologies such as those developed by Titan America, FIU’s Ultra High Performance Concrete, and CaptureCrete, developed by Carbon Limit. StartUPFIU will provide services and mentorship to at least 60 infrastructure innovation startups and small businesses. Additionally, our partners will provide expertise and input for improvement of building codes and standards.

Americas Roundtable: Reality of Resiliency in the Americas
Join an experienced panel on the importance of sustainable water management and climate adaptation strategies. Our diverse panel represents various perspectives, including USAID's stance on disaster resilience, insights from the Bahamas, and moderation by a prominent think tank. Join us as we find synergies for collaborations between researchers, governments, the private sector, and other critical stakeholders on the progress of the future of resilient infrastructure and environmental sustainability in the Americas.
Recently, members of the Florida Congressional delegation secured millions in increased funding for FIU’s research initiatives, particularly on critical climate technologies. 🌍 🏛️
This includes over $8 million in direct earmarks, making FIU the number one school in the state in securing congressional earmarks. 📈
