On July 2, 1881, Charles Guiteau shot President James A. Garfield at the Baltimore and Potomac Railway Station in Washington, D.C. The assassin Guiteau was unhappy with the President because he was under the illusion that he deserved an ambassadorship to Vienna for supporting Garfield in the previous election. At the train station, Guiteau walked up to President Garfield - who was about to board a train to travel to visit his sick wife - and shot him in the arm and the back. The shooter was quickly captured. Others rushed to aid the President.
Instead of letting the wound heal with the bullet left in the body, the President’s doctor kept widening the wound with unwashed hands to remove the bullet. This led to the infection that killed Garfield. Garfield was only president for 120 days before he was shot on July 2 and died more than two months later on September 19, 1881. Guiteau's temporary insanity defense did not sway the jury and he was executed by hanging. The approximate location of the shooting is near two wayside panels along the National Mall across Madison Drive from the National Gallery of Art. Learn more about President Garfield at James A. Garfield National Historic Site.

Due to safety concerns from anticipated crowding and limited access caused by ongoing construction on the steps, the Lincoln Memorial will be closed on July 4. The plaza and lawn by the Reflecting Pool will be open as usual for prime fireworks viewing. The memorial steps and chamber will reopen on July 5.

Artist Jacob Lawrence created this aptly named painting “When It Is Warm the Parks Are Filled with People” in 1943. In a style he called “dynamic cubism,” Lawrence used bold, vibrant colors and geometric shapes to document the African American experience, especially in Harlem. This painting is currently on display in our Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden’s full-floor exhibition “Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960.”
