Forging metal has always been my choice of material as an artist. I was first introduced to as a student at Philadelphia College of Art(presently University of the Arts) in 1974. I was captivated by it’s potential as a sculptural medium. Upon graduation with a BFA in sculpture, I began working at Samuel Yellin Metalworkers in Philadelphia in 1977. This studio renowned for its excellence in hand forged metalworks dating back to 1906, was my training ground for the next eleven years. I began as an apprentice and worked my way up to Head Smith of the forging dept. While at the Yellin studios, I assisted and led on many major projects, as Gate and railing for the Washington Cathedral in DC, Display Case for the Book of Kells at the University of Pittsburgh, the estate of Frederick Koch in Butler PA and numerous private commissions around the United States. In 1987 I received a 1% for the Arts Commission from the City of Philadelphia.
After eleven years at the Yellin Studios, I moved to Virginia to set up a studio with my business partner David Munn. Over 18 years we completed numerous commissions for private and corporate entities. In 1999-2000 I received a Virginia Museum Fellowship in Sculpture . During that time I spent a week at Rose Industries an industrial forge shop in Cleveland ,Ohio, forging larger scale works.
In 2007 I set up a new studio. Over 16 years I have completed 7 major residential commissions. Exhibitions have included a 2 person show at Page Bond Gallery in Richmond, VA; a group exhibition at the American University Art Museum, Washington DC in; a group exhibition at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington DC in and a group exhibition at the Historical Society in Washington, DC. In 2012 I went to Ukraine to an international blacksmithing conference to make a sculpture . Recent Publications include a portfolio in The Metal Design International 2014 and Beauty in the Shadows, ironwork in the Washington Cathedral by Nol Putnam & BABA magazine.

ARTINA 2024: A Point of View
Washington Sculptors Group & Sandy Spring Museum
Exhibit dates: September 18 – November 10, 2024
Submission Deadline: August 11, 2024 (New Deadline!)
About the Exhibition: The phrase ‘a point of view’ can have multiple meanings. It can be defined as a position or perspective from which physical objects, mental concepts, issues, etc are considered or evaluated. It can also be used to refer to one’s opinion or perspective on things, their personal view of the world. In art, perspective is the process of translating the 3-dimensional world onto a 2-dimensional canvas. It is the skill of using line, mathematics, color, and any number of techniques to trick the eye into seeing through a plane into another world. In modern parlance, the initialization POV has become ubiquitous, whether in the world of gaming or social media, to reference scenes and videos from the perspective of the person looking out at the world. Borrowing this language, this exhibition asks artists to ponder the nature of perspective. Each of us has a unique lens through which we view, navigate, and react to the world. While we can never fully inhabit another’s viewpoint, as artists, we have the power to offer glimpses of our own ways of seeing the world, made manifest through our work and the discourse around it.
Artists are invited to explore POV as a concept or technique for sculpting illusion, presenting your view of reality, commenting on the fallibility of perception, offering multiple viewpoints of a concept, providing a historical perspective on a topic of choice, or any other way that best presents your point of view.
-- Nehemiah Dixon, III
Artists are invited to submit existing or new sculptures, and site-specific installations that fit the theme. You are welcome to take the theme and explore any metaphors in nature, society, politics, etc. Go wild! But provide a point of reference for your viewer/participant. Artists are especially encouraged to engage with the museum’s history and current mission in any way they see fit, including through the digitized collection available here. All mediums are welcome, but all works must be suitable for outdoors with little to no maintenance.

Happy Juneteenth! Let us celebrate the originally enslaved Black Washingtonian sculptor and skilled foundry worker Philip Reid who made it possible to cast the sculpture Freedom that’s on the top of Congress. It’s ironic that the sculpture Freedom was cast by an ensued man, but that’s the United States history
