Navy Yards CSO
If you’ve ever been curious about DC’s Combined Sewage System and it’s related CSO pitfalls look no further. This is what a combined sewage overflow looks like in real-time. Due to the vast amounts of rain this morning a CSO was triggered at the O St Pump House CSO pictures here. Around 1/3 of DC is served by a combined sewage system which means when we get large amounts of rain like today the system can’t handle all the water and an overflow needs to occur. With these overflows comes sewage, trash - basically anything you’ve left on the streets or flushed down your toilet can come here. Many older urban areas have combined sewage systems and while our new Clean Rivers Tunnels can capture over 90% of the overflows, some still do occur on large rain events like today (Almost 3.5" in an hour!). Is this the new normal for DC? Are 50-year storms the new 10-year storms? Things to think about today while DC handles this.

Raw sewage overflow into Anacostia River
Rain is a beautiful thing, raw sewage and trash dumping into our rivers from overflow pipes, not so much! In the last 5 hours, over 1.5 inches rain has fallen over DC, bringing millions of gallons of combined raw sewage and polluted stormwater directly to the river by underground pipes from Combined Sewer Systems (CSS) into the Anacostia River, Rock Creek and the Potomac River. Not only fish and other aquatic species may be harmed. Humans who come in direct contact with contaminated river water are at risk from exposure to E. coli and fecal coliform bacteria which can enter through an open cut, mouth and even eye tissue. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea similar to food poisoning. The light pictured in the video will stay lit for 24 hours after an overflow event ends. There is a similar warning light on the Georgetown waterfront. If you are out on the water, check the light, and take care!
