This , we encourage you to take action to reduce plastic pollution! Plastic is one of the biggest trash issues on the Anacostia River, not only by amount but also impact.
Almost half of all trash we collected at cleanups in 2023 was plastic litter. In 2023 alone, we collected over 23,000 plastic bottles at cleanups and more than 72,000 plastic bottles in our Bandalong® Litter Traps. That’s a lot of plastic in our river! These items can cause even more damage to the Anacostia’s wildlife when they break down into microplastics and become incredibly hard to remove from the environment.
Learn more about plastic pollution in the Anacostia watershed in our Trash Mitigation Report on our website and linked in our bio. Stay tuned for how you can take action to help!
Happy Plastic Free July! This month, we encourage you to take action in your life to help make the Anacostia River for all. One way is to join us this Saturday July 20th from 9am-12pm for a Clean Waterways trash cleanup at Pope Branch Park!
Rain or shine. All supplies provided. Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that can get dirty. More info at anacostiariverkeeper.org/events-calendar

Water quality data is out for DC Citizen Science Water Quality Monitoring! Swipe through to see how your favorite site fared this week. Note that AR-2 and AR-3 are red and yellow due to high turbidity, though both sites had low single sample E. coli bacteria this week. Thank you to our monitors for braving the heat through the summer to get this important data! Special thanks to our partners and funders , , , and !
Maryland monitoring results are out for this week!
A few sites had low bacteria levels and could be good spots for recreation this weekend: Burnt Mills, Paint Branch and Becca Lily Park. However, Sligo Creek and some other sites had high bacteria levels. Note that Northeast Branch also had very low water clarity, so avoid water contact there as well. Reminder to avoid contact with streams for 72-hours after heavy rain.

Following Wednesday’s weather, and out of an abundance of caution, we took additional water quality samples on Friday. They have come back above E. coli recreational standards. Splash is being postponed until July 13th.
We are extremely disappointed to postpone our event but for the safety of all of the splashers, staff, and volunteers, this is the correct call.
Splash is tomorrow! Water quality results from Wednesday passed all DC recreational water quality standards and we have been approved by to host the special swim event.
We’re so excited we even made a playlist! Head to t.ly/YqL-B or the link in our bio to listen.
See you tomorrow at Kingman Island for Splash!

Monitoring for Splash is complete! ✅ Today we collected water samples to analyze for E. coli bacteria and turbidity, and measured pH to ensure the water quality is safe for Splash. We will receive results tomorrow and compare them to DC’s recreational water quality standards to get the green light for Splash! In 2023, our monitoring before the previously planned Splash dates all passed these standards with flying colors.
