Social Movement Technologies is offering matching grants of $3,000 to organizing groups and $10,000 to organizing networks and coalitions for the purpose of significantly ramping up their online organizing in 2017. "Code Next will work with 70 eighth-grade students in Oakland and 70 at its location in Harlem, which is set to open in 2017. Until then, students in New York will able to attend classes at Google’s NYC headquarters.
Through Code Next’s curriculum, which was developed in partnership with MIT Media Lab, students will be able to learn how to code, participate in hands-on activities and expose themselves to computer language processing in after-school and weekend programs."
Code Next: a commitment to cultivating young Black and Hispanic tech leaders Code Next connects computer science to students’ everyday lives through projects like designing and programming a robot or 3D printing an Android chess set.
The free four week long community learning series is well underway!
We are in the second week of teaching and learning the Fundamentals of Programming at the Code for Progress space. We are focusing on python.
Interested in learning code and meeting others who share similar interests? Join us for our hack nights! We meet every other Wednesday from 6-8p.m at the Code for Progress office in Dupont. Next one is October 26th!
We visited the offices at Mapbox DC yesterday!
Map box is an open source mapping platform for developers. We heard from the security team, cartographers, and learned about geocoding, open street map, Mapnik, Mapbox GL, and Mapbox Platform.
These site visits are a way for the fellows to see what careers and opportunities are possible in tech as well as to build community with local DC tech organizations.

Stretch Your Mind: Code - DML Central If everyone learns to code, they won’t necessarily all become rich, but they might all begin to see the world in different, beneficial ways.
This week we visited the headquarters of Vox Media in DC! Thank you Ashley T. and the rest of the Vox team for the wonderful visit and speaking with the group about the work that you all do everyday. We learned about the eight editorial brands of Vox including: SB Nation, The Verge, Polygon, Curbed, Eater, Racked, Vox and Recode. We also got a chance to hear from three web developers speak about "A day in the life at Vox." Super informative and helpful. The team, the work, and the offices at Vox are awesome. We really enjoyed our time.
