Are you acquainted with the ancient super grain, a favorite of all Russian babushka’s - the almighty buckwheat? Despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat and is thus gluten-free.

I have been so busy with the restaurant and my grandkids, now that they are on summer vacation, that I have not written about Mari Vanna’s story in a while.

So where were we. Oh yes, as you remember, after my home could no longer accommodate my guests, we opened my tiny first restaurant in what used to be a ground-floor historic apartment in the heart of St. Petersburg. It wasn't long before my children, some of whom live in Moscow, and visitors from the capital started pestering me that they need Mari Vanna in Moscow.

I am not a young lady, and at first, I was scared and hesitant as this seemed a big and serious endeavor. My biggest fear was to lose touch with my guests, to become a generic restaurant. But I was lucky to have the support of my friends, family, and a growing team, who ensured me that Mari Vanna will always be true to its soul.

And so, Mari Vanna Moscow was born. Nestled in the cozy little space on Malaya Bronnaya, I chose to fill this space with the esthetic and feel of Moscow. It was here that I decided that everywhere we go, we will pay homage not only to our soul and culture but that of the locals. And of course, it became the home of Shurik, our chihuahua, and Venya (Benjamin) our British Blue cat. And boy did they become instant celebrities! They basked in guests' love and attention and became a bit of a social media sensation. Venya is still here, so make sure to give him some smetana next time you visit.

Unfortunately, I have to run, my pie is ready and I have a few hungry eyes eagerly awaiting to taste the fruits of my labor. I promise to tell you more soon. Until the next time, take care and be safe!

In Georgia, food is quite a fitting expression for the culture. If you visit Georgia and ask the locals which specific dish you should try foremost, the first shout out will be “Oh, you eat Khinkali ”
Hard to pronounce but delicious to eat. Khinkali can be described as giant dumplings!

Firstly, you hold the ‘crown’ (typically not eaten) of the Khinkali with your right hand, and lift the bottom part with your left hand, so it’s upside down. Slowly and carefully, bite a small hole in the Khinkali and drink the delicious juice inside. Then bite in and enjoy the rest!
