See this 12/31/2023 message from Teri Janine Quinn, President of the Bloomingdale Civic Association:

It is with great sadness that the Bloomingdale Civic Association ("BCA”) shares the announcement of Dr. Bertha Holliday’s passing. Bertha was a Bloomingdale resident for decades and a BCA Board member for more than 13 years. She also served four consecutive terms (2015-2022) as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner representing Bloomingdale on Advisory Neighborhood Commission 5E. Bertha founded and served as co-Director of the BCA’s Bloomingdale Village Square Project through which she helped produce a Bloomingdale oral history film, a Bloomingdale history timeline, and an extensive Bloomingdale design plan and recommendations report, and advocated for the advancement of the North Capitol Street Deckover Park proposal. Bertha also chaired several Bloomingdale House Tours which functioned as fundraisers for the BCA Scholarship Fund. Whenever and wherever there was a case to be made on behalf of a marginalized group, you would surely find Bertha hard at work. While she was clearly devoted to community service, she was equally committed to enjoying life. Bertha travelled extensively and you could not beat her to the dance floor. She was a great host - even meetings at Bertha’s house were often accompanied by a full meal, wine and a lively post-meeting catch up session that often ran late into the night.

This note merely provides a small glimpse into what was an incredibly well and fully lived life. Those of us who knew and loved Bertha have many Bertha tales to treasure and share. Bloomingdale has lost a fierce advocate and friend.

May her memory always be a blessing.

Best,

Teri Janine Quinn
President, Bloomingdale Civic Association

The Executive Board of the Bloomingdale Civic Association (BCA) is preparing to convene a neighborhood discussion about the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and its interaction with Bloomingdale.

An important step in this process is to conduct a survey of Bloomingdale residents to gather baseline data about their experiences and expectations relative to police officers serving our neighborhood.
