The school year is almost over! Our middle school students have several projects that they've completed to help share and show what they've learned. Students in 7th grade participated in Global Issues Day, where they researched global issues while seeking to understand the rights and responsibilities we share as global citizens. In 6th grade, students explored and researched the connections between immigration and food traditions.

Lower School students recently enjoyed a performances of Stuart Little by our Upper School Performance Studies class!
In Performance Studies class, students examine the greater world through performance. They develop acting techniques and explore all aspects of performance, including dance, music, and theatre. Students learn the basics, such as how to analyze a script and dig deeper into character objectives and motivation. The course also provides a lens to reflect on our society and the role performance plays in interpreting and processing deeper meaning. In addition to working with different types of monologues and scenes, students write and create their own performance pieces that explore their individual passions!
On Memorial Day, we remember and honor those in our armed forces who gave their lives in service to our country.
Last week Middle School hosted their annual Day of Dialogue. Day of Dialogue provides students of all backgrounds the tools to navigate the journey through their identity development. Our goal is to help our students empathize with their peers' experiences and develop specific skills and vocabulary around equity, inclusion, and belonging that will contribute to a more caring and supportive community. The day is the culmination of several workshops held throughout the year, which have been planned with input from faculty and student leaders.
This year students used their research skills to advance their understanding of allyship on a topic of their choice. Seventh and eighth graders had several leadership roles throughout the day, including participating in two panel discussions and serving as helpers in the fifth and sixth grade classrooms. Students from each grade presented their work at our closing session in the afternoon. Research topics were many and varied, including “Disparities in Educational Funding,” “Spanish-Speaking Kids in English-Speaking Schools,” “Braille in Schools,” “Daily Life of Students with Disabilities,” and “Religions Accommodations on College Campuses.”
Earlier this month, we were excited to welcome Mr. Tyrone Brown to Ms. Levinson's Civil Liberties class. Mr.Brown discussed his work as a civil rights advocate, including clerking for Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren, as part of the class's examination of the Equal Protection Clause and its celebration of Civil Rights champions.
A little rain couldn't dampen the excitement of this year's Fête! This past Saturday's Fête Champêtre is one of Maret's longest-standing traditions with an amazing variety of delicious foods and favorite games for kids of all ages! Thank you to everyone who made it such a great success! 🐸 🎉
Today was the seniors’ last day on campus. Next week, they head out to do internships and senior projects. We’re missing you already, seniors! 🐸 ❤️

A huge congrats to Sayra and Gabi, who finished 2nd in the DCSAA girls doubles tournament yesterday. They played incredible tennis all week and came up just short of beating the #1 seeded doubles team in the final.
The girls team finished 3rd overall in the tournament, just behind Sidwell and NCS.
Go Frogs! 🐸 🎾
Our upcoming K-12 art exhibition celebrates the imaginative and skillful work of our visual art students and the dedication of our teaching artists, who provide a dynamic program that empowers students to explore, experiment, and engage with the world around them through the lens of visual interpretation. We invite you to this comprehensive exhibition that uplifts the creative genius of our K-12 community!
The show runs May 18–28, 2024 in the Old Gym! We will be hosting an opening reception on May 20 from 3:00-5:00 PM!
This spring, first graders were introduced to a local species of fish, the American Shad. In science classes, students are learned about the water cycle, the concept of a watershed, where some of our local watersheds are located, the life cycle of the shad, and the importance of keeping our land and water clean.
First graders built a shad fish hatchery through a partnership with an upper school science class, and the first graders had fun getting to know their upper school buddies while doing water testing! Watching egg development tied into our first grade curriculum of life cycles, and once the eggs developed into tiny fry (baby fish), students took a field trip with their upper school buddies to release the fish into the Anacostia River in hopes that they grow, migrate to the Atlantic Ocean, and return to this river to lay eggs while helping to replenish the native shad population.
Our work on behalf of the river allows the students to make a personal and lasting connection to the river. This project has been a core part of the first grade science curriculum for the last 15 years. Some of our US buddies remember when they were in first grade doing this project!
The US Jewish Student Affinity Group sponsored a Klezmer band to help celebrate Jewish Heritage Month! The band, Machaya, had performers on the clarinet, keyboard, electronic accordion, and violin and shared a bit about the origins of klezmer music and characteristics of the music to listen for during the concert. Thanks to the students who also got up and learned some dance moves!
Happy Mother’s Day! 🐸 ❤️
Don't miss these upcoming concerts at Maret! 🎶 🐸 🎶
We're excited for Reunion Weekend coming up May 17-19! One of the highlights is recognizing our Distinguished Alumni Award recipients on Saturday, May 18!
This year's recipients are Dr. Phoebe Aron ’09 and Dr. Rinad S. Beidas ’99!
Dr. Phoebe Aron ’09 is a climate change scientist and water resource management engineer. She is a senior principal scientist at Hazen and Sawyer, a leading national environmental engineering consulting firm focused on water supply and water quality challenges. Aron leads Hazen’s applied research program on water resources and climate change to help clients ensure that drinking water and other water resources are safe, reliable, and sustainably managed. She directs a team of data scientists and engineers who use cutting-edge climate models to help solve some of the most complex water challenges we face today. Before joining Hazen, Aron worked as a water science researcher at the US Geological Survey, University of Michigan, and DC Water. She also leads wilderness trips all around the world, combining a love of being outdoors with a passion for leadership education.
Dr. Rinad S. Beidas ’99 specializes in the nascent but growing field of implementation science, which strives to translate research into reality. “I feel passionate about implementation science as a tool to amplify the needs of our communities and ensure everyone has equitable access to benefit from scientific discoveries,” she says. Beidas is chair and Ralph Seal Paffenbarger professor of Medical Social Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and is one of a small number of women and an even smaller number of non-MDs to chair a department at a medical school. Previously, she served as founding director of the University of Pennsylvania Implementation Science Center at the Leonard Davis Institute and director of the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit.
Students in Maret's South Asian and East/Southeast Asian Affinity Groups recently presented at an upper school assembly for Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Students dressed in clothing representing their heritage, adoptees shared their personal journeys and experiences, and AAPI Jeopardy was held for advising groups. There was also a quick geography lesson on all the nations that are considered a part of Asia. Thanks to everyone who shared their personal experiences and worked to make this assembly a success!
When we survey our alumni and talk with our students and families, something stands out as a hallmark of the Maret experience. The dedication and talents of our incredible faculty! This week is Faculty Appreciation Week, and we want to be sure to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to every teacher and faculty member who has impacted lives at Maret. We wouldn't be Maret without all of you. ❤️ 🐸
