Back in circa 2003, through a state grant, Ohio brought several parents and educators from across the state to the PEAK Inclusive Education Conference which was always one of the BEST in the country during the tenure of Barbara Buswell and her amazing Colorado Parent Center team. With the closure of all state institutions for persons with significant disabilities finally in sight, advocates are discussing how to conserve and interpret for the public the reality of the institution as the epicenter of the civil rights movement for persons with complex support needs. This panel will discuss the grass-roots initiative to establish a National Museum of Disability History and Culture and explore how best to capture the experience of institutionalization and liberation from institutions in places of remembrance. * Part one provides an introduction to PBS vocabulary and essential guiding principles, with an overview of assumptions about behavior and important terms to know for supporting individuals with challenging behavior. We explore why punishment does not work and how implementing evidence-based practices improves an individual’s quality of life.
* Part two will focus on the components of a thorough assessment and how data should lead to effective and efficient positive behavior support plans that help improve an individual’s quality of life. We will review the steps of a Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) including how data are collected and what an effective PBS plan to address behaviors of concern should look like.
