Profit before people and planet: How economic policies and corporate profit maximisation perpetuate the unsustainable exploitation of the Brazilian Amazon and its poeple - Financial Transparency Coalition 12/21/2022

New Report by Christian Aid, Latindadd, & Financial Transparency Coalition!

Tax is a human rights issue. Big mining companies operating in Brazil’s Amazon receive large cumulative tax exemptions. Tax exemptions facilitate the expansion of industrial mining, and reduce access to public services.

Direct impacts of exemptions created by the military government in '60s have displaced communities by expanding extractive industries. 75% waiver applies to corporate income tax IRPJ, extended until 2023. With a further waiver of 25% on the rest, it can reach 82.5%.

Taken over the previous ten-year timespan, the value of just one tax exemption, IRPJ, received by one of the world's largest bauxite mining companies, MRN, amounts to more than what the entire host municipality Oriximiná approximately generated in taxes, fees and charges.

For all industry in the Amazon this tax break on IRPJ in 2018 reached $583 million in lost revenue - enough to cover 800,000 recipients of the programme for that year. Many of whom are from Quilombola, riverine or indigenous communities.
