It’s been a while since I’ve provided updates on my work. I’ve been extremely busy and haven’t had time to write or publish anything, but yesterday, something happened that I cannot publicly share.

A customer approached me asking if I could repair the HDMI port on his PS5. There was some miscommunication. I have fixed prices for most common repairs, and replacing the HDMI port on a PS5 is no exception—it costs $130 plus taxes. I don’t repair ports; I replace them. That’s the only way I can guarantee the quality of my service and offer a warranty. This case turned out to be more interesting.

When the customer brought the console to my shop, it was already half-disassembled, and I knew right away this wasn’t going to be a simple case. It became clear that the old port had already been removed, and a new one was installed but not soldered. This was strange and usually means that a previous repair attempt was unsuccessful, which often leads to additional problems.

In the customer's presence, we opened the console:
1. Some screws weren’t tightened, and the customer brought them in a separate bag.
2. Almost all screws showed signs of being unscrewed with the wrong tool.
3. The plastic covers had been forcibly removed, and many clips and guides were bent.
4. Some screws were placed in the wrong spots.
5. The screws securing the APU clamp were stripped, and it took effort to remove them.
6. Beneath the clamp was a protective plate to prevent scratches on the board, which was broken.
7. The APU should have had liquid metal applied, but in this console, almost all of it had evaporated, and the surface of the APU was covered in oxidation.
8. The HDMI port was indeed a new one but not soldered, and the real issue lay beneath. The old port had been ripped out with pliers, leaving the pads completely destroyed and deep scratches around the port area.
9. Several components around the port, such as capacitors and diodes, were missing.

After reviewing the damage, I informed the customer of the new repair cost. The customer initially tried to argue that the price should remain at $130, as we had agreed over the phone. After pointing out all the flaws and damage, the customer acknowledged that the scope of work and the need for additional materials had increased.

The customer explained that before coming to me, they had taken the console to Best Buy, where they were unable to replace the HDMI port and just returned the console. I’m not sure how true that is, but if it is, Best Buy should be ashamed.

In the end, the customer declined to repair the console for now and decided to try to find a lower price for the repair. Honestly, after what I saw, I’m not sure many shops would be willing to take on this job. We’ll see. Either way, I wish the customer good luck.

Why do many shops avoid working with Apple devices, particularly MacBooks?

The photo clearly shows the difference in screw sizes. The difference isn’t just in size but also in the type of screws. In most laptops, a Phillips screwdriver is usually used, with Torx being rare. In MacBooks, at least three different types of screws are used, and they are all very small.

Another challenge is that you can’t use power tools because it’s easy to strip the screw heads, so all these countless screws have to be removed manually.

MacBook Air repair after a coffee spill. The photo shows the impact of the liquid in less than 24 hours. Some components are beyond repair, but most importantly, we managed to restore the motherboard and all the data on it, which is the best proof of our technicians' professionalism.

Meet the most common problem in Xbox Series S. Due to terrible soldering quality, HDMI damage often leads to damaged pads and traces. The consequences of this damage are visible in the photo. I spent 4 hours repairing this console. If you're considering buying this console, it's better not to. It's better to save up and buy the Series X. If you already own one, use it with extra care!

Nintendo Switch Lite. A colleague brought it from another service. The console wouldn't turn on. The motherboard was damaged by liquid, causing several components to corrode and resulting in the necessary voltages not being reached. The board was cleaned of corrosion, and the damaged components were replaced. Additionally, the flexible cable for the power and volume buttons was found to be damaged and was also replaced with a new one.

Repair of PS2.
The console was sent from AZ. I don't know the full history of this console, but it came to me after some attempted repairs. Result: repaired the power supply, replaced the fan, and replaced one of the fuses on the motherboard. There was also an issue with the drive not spinning the discs. It turned out that the laser's flexible cable was incorrectly installed, and the connector was extremely dirty with something resembling grease. I also had to adjust the laser's power. Now, the console works perfectly, reads all types of discs, and is ready to bring joy to its owner!

Oscilloscopes are used in repair services to diagnose issues that a standard multimeter cannot detect.

In the first photo, the multimeter shows 3V, suggesting everything is fine. However, the laptop's motherboard does not start. The second photo shows a measurement of the same point using an oscilloscope. It reveals that instead of a steady high signal of 3V and data exchange on this line, there are pulses, indicating a fault in this line.

This is a clear example of why RAID technology should be used whenever possible. One of the HDDs in my server failed. The consequences for me are none. All the data is intact, and all I need to do is install a new HDD in place of the failed one.

In this video, I demonstrate the removal of the PCH from a motherboard. The motherboard is shown in close-up, mounted on an infrared soldering station. This laptop was damaged after an unsuccessful attempt to replace the thermal paste. The user didn't disconnect the battery, and during disassembly, a screw fell onto the board, causing a short circuit. The short circuit damaged several components, including the PCH.

PS5 repair with blue light of death. This was a long repair. In total, it took 3 weeks and $120 plus the cost of parts ($70 + tax).

In reality, the diagnosis and repair took 1 day, and the rest of the time was spent ordering and receiving parts. This console had 2 damaged RAM chips. The problem was that this motherboard revision had Hynix chips, which are not always easy to find. However, the repair is now complete, and the console is once again delighting its owner.
