In the face of adversity, true leadership comes to light. Recently, the head of Ukraine's Nobel Peace Prize-winning Center for Civil Liberties / Центр громадянських свобод, Oleksandra Matviichuk, led a powerful master class reflecting on the two-year anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. She was joined by four Ukrainian Millennium Fellows who are resiliently shaping the country's government, media, and business landscape - Olena Sotnyk, Denis Jatsyshyn, Alyona Nevmerzhytska, and Olga Zykova.

Discussing the evolution of their work provided a vivid reminder of the power of community in navigating times of crisis.

As our Taiwan Study Tour came to a close, the Fellows found themselves in a state of reflection while in Kinmen.

From the historical Kinmen Kaoliang Liquor Company to the globally-minded BoCun Primary School, our cohort discovered the island's calm and resilient spirit. Seeing Taiwan through the eyes of its next generation left an air of hopefulness looking to the future of the region. Observing the Xiamen, China skyline from the Kinmen shores brought all our previous discussions to reality, zooming out to consider all the learnings and revelations Fellows were preparing to take home.

Reflecting on our incredible expedition, we resonated deeply with Taiwan’s vision to build bridges and foster conscious leaders. From engagements with President Tsai to local leaders, our fellows have gained rare insights and forged connections that will last a lifetime.

As we continue Fellowship programming, the bonds of this cohort will only continue to evolve. Stay tuned for the impact these experiences will have on their leadership paths ahead.

The study tour journey continued in Taipei, where Fellows engaged in a series of eye-opening government, business, and civil society meetings.

Ahead of upcoming Presidential elections in January, discussions with candidates and representatives of the DPP, KMT, and TPP provided range of perspectives on navigating Taiwan's political landscape. Meetings with 外交部 Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ROC(Taiwan), 數位發展部moda(Ministry of Digital Affairs), the National Development Council 國發會, 旺宏電子 Macronix, and a dialogue with civil society leaders described national and grassroots efforts around Taiwan, all emphasizing the importance of advocating local development while building global partnerships.

The undeniable highlight was our exclusive meeting with President 蔡英文 Tsai Ing-wen. Her reflections on leading with grace, humor, and humility in precarious times left a lasting mark on our cohort. Our time in Taipei was an exploration into the complexities of leadership, leaving fellows with a wealth of insights to discuss and carry forward.

Our annual Study Tour with the class of 2023 Millennium Fellows has recently come to a close. Follow along for updates from these highly anticipated ten days in Taiwan.

The program kicked off in Hualien for an introspective leadership retreat with our partners at Spencer Stuart. Fellows spent time learning more about their leadership styles, building community with each other, and preparing for the program ahead.

After a warm welcome from local government representatives, we were immersed in the rich indigenous history and culture at National D**g Hwa University(NDHU). Capped with hikes through Taroko National Park, these opening days laid the foundation for learning, laughter, and curiosity that guided the rest of the program.

The twenty-four Millennium Fellows have now returned to their home countries of Armenia, Ukraine, South Africa, Albania, Lithuania, USA, Germany, Spain, Brazil, UK, Turkey, Canada, and Senegal. They return with a stronger global network, new leadership tools, and deeper insights into the political and economic landscape of Guatemala and Central America, which will strengthen their capacity as next generation global leaders moving forward.

One Fellow summed up the experience perfectly: “It was remarkable to watch a group of 24 strangers transform into a tight-knit, inclusive, and engaged community. I am immensely moved by this experience; it was unlike anything I have ever done before.”

The Millennium Fellowship Study Tour to Guatemala concluded with a truly enriching and unforgettable experience in Peten, led and hosted by Marianne Hernández, Executive Director of PACUNAM- an incredible organization focused on the conservation of Mayan cultural and natural heritage through sustainable development.

We flew over Guatemalan jungles in small planes to visit ancient Mayan sites with local archaeologists and to gain invaluable knowledge on resilient communities and historical preservation. Among the many highlights, Fellows were treated to lunch in Uaxactun by a local indigenous community and witnessed a breathtaking sunset over the vast and beautiful expanse of Tikal National Park from atop Mundo Perdido.

In Guatemala City, we transitioned our focus to the government, civil society, economy, and green investments in Guatemala. Gaining a deeper insight into local and international politics, Fellows held several meetings with President Alejandro Giammattei, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mario Búcaro, Ambassadors William W. Popp and Alfonso Quiñónez, and Guatemala City Mayor Ricardo Quiñonez.

The Universidad del Valle de Guatemala hosted detailed discussions on energy, inclusive growth, and elections with FUNDESA, CMI-Corporación Multi Inversiones, Victor Asturias, and various business and civil society leaders to give Fellows better insight into the strength and future of Guatemalan NGOs and business sector.

Atlantic Council Millennium Fellows began their Study Tour journey in Antigua, immersing themselves in the rich history and vibrant culture of Guatemala with the guidance of Professor Ronald Flores, Director of Michael Polanyi College at UFM. To prepare for the week ahead, Fellows were mentally and physically engaged in team building and leadership workshops from the experts at Spencer Stuart.

Special thanks to Wakami Global, a local brand that partners directly with women in rural Guatemala, and Progreso, a leading cement company focused on inclusive growth, for providing firsthand insight into the economic and cultural ecosystem of local indigenous communities and businesses, and for reminding us to always ask “How can I help?”

03/27/2023

The Millennium Fellows recently completed their Study Tour in Guatemala, delving into key issues such as diversity, economy, and environment. From meeting government leaders in the highest offices to absorbing the magnitude of ancient Mayan temples, this was a transformative experience for all.
