These two babies both attend the same La Leche League Canada Group with their moms.
The little girl is at the 3rd percentile, meaning 3 percent of exclusively breastfed babies are smaller than she is. And the little boy is at the 90th percentile, meaning 10 percent of exclusively breastfed babies are larger than him.
Both are almost 5 months old and are exclusively breastfeeding, as often and as long as they want to. Neither of them has even been given a bottle, formula or solid foods.
Both babies are happy, healthy and developing well. Humans come in a wide variety of sizes!
Just some thoughts on things we need to talk about more as parents. What would you add?
💕 Parenting is amazing AND it's amazingly hard. !!
💕 There's no one right way to parent - we need to take the wisdom and knowledge from around us and tailor it to our own situation
💕 It doesn't all come naturally - It's time to debunk this idea that we just somehow know what to do!
💕 Kids struggle even if we do all the things - Every kid struggles somehow, and these days those numbers are soaring. there are lots of reasons, it's not all about your parenting.
💕 Changing patterns is work - We all repeat what was modeled to us. If we want to change, it takes awareness, commitment and sometimes professional help.
💕 We're always learning and growing - even after our kids grow up.
💕 We all have mixed emotions along the way. - Ever wanted to run away? You're not alone, even if it feels that way.
💕 Offering ourselves compassion and care is vital. - We deserve all the kindness and care we offer to others. Tending to your own needs, every day in all kinds of ways, helps you be the parent you want to be and enjoy the ride more too.
💕 Parents need and deserve more support. We need that village. We need systemic change. Keep speaking up.
👉 Episode 11 of the ✨A Little Easier✨ podcast is all about When our kids (or we) need extra support, we have to 🗣️💕🪴
This post was Inspired by - an account I love!
Babies use their hands when they eat, just like adults do! Their little hands help them find their way to the breast and latch comfortably. They massage the breast to stimulate milk flow. And touching the breast can help babies feel secure and remain calm so they can breastfeed effectively. (Frantic babies do not feed well!) Some parents worry about babies scratching their faces. Cut or file nails safely when they reach beyond the fingertips. This will prevent scratching.
So, take the mitts off and let your baby’s little hands help out!
It’s all fun and games
And sexy breathing exercises for birth
And romantic plans about how he’ll take the baby while you do yoga every day
Until you’re 10 days postpartum
Still bleeding and soaked in breastmilk
Riding a roller coaster of hormones and sleep deprivation
And your lovely partner forgets to pick up a smoothie on his way home from the grocery store
And you lose your sh✨t
Like sobbing into the bathroom sink
Like cursing his mother
Like wondering why you ever procreated with someone capable of such unimaginable selfishness
And then, when the storm has passed, and you’ve had a snack - you realize
Two shaky, raw, sleep deprived humans
Trying to be life rafts for one another
While sinking into the depths of exhaustion and stress
Keeping the tiniest, most fragile, precious being afloat
Is hard AF
We weren’t meant to do this alone
We were not meant to be sent out to sea on a tiny little life boat with no map
Even the most loving, stable partnership can sink under the weight of operating in survival mode while finding your footing as parents
So, if you’re out there, treading water
Buried in laundry and breastmilk
Surviving on freezer pizza and three hours of sleep
Thinking mildly unkind thoughts about the person you chose to parent with
Because he can’t seem to calm the baby or remember your smoothies or grasp the depths of the earth shaking transition you’re navigating
You’re not alone
And it will get easier
One sleepy, shaky day at a time”
