Literacy of Northern New York
We provide one-to-one tutoring to adults who are non-readers up through 8th grade level. We help people learn English as a second language.
Our services are free, thanks to grants we receive from the NYS Education Department and United Way of NNY.

Students at our Fort Drum English as a Second Language classes gathered to say farewell to Barbara Zembiec, who was our substitute teacher this summer. Barb, who taught for many years in the Watertown School District, did a wonderful job with the classes. Many students told us they enjoyed having her as their teacher.

Naomi Godbey, director of the North Country Immigration Program, ONA Legal Counsel, visited our Watertown ESL classes today to discuss free immigration legal consultations and services available to citizens and noncitizens. Our students had a lot of immigration questions and appreciated Naomi taking the time to answer them all.

Our Fort Drum ESL classes visited Sackets Harbor today and enjoyed the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America." The exhibit featured historical and contemporary photos, multimedia displays and historical objects about the origins of American democracy, civil right movements, the struggles of historically marginalized people and the freedoms and responsibilities of citizens. The class also visited the Sackets Harbor Battlefield historical site and enjoyed beautiful Lake Ontario.

Our Fort Drum ESL class learned about the history of voting rights and women's rights during today's Intermediate class. Our students were looking up the definitions of assigned vocabulary words on their phones.
We are accepting donations for the garage sale that Watertown Savings Bank is hosting to support adult literacy programs and local food pantries. We also need folding tables, which will be returned to you after our sale is over.
