Today, arsenal commander Col. Jason Schultz welcomed the latest batch of new employees joining including our newest Machinist Apprentice class 92. The Machinist Apprenticeship program began in 1905 and has been an invaluable pipeline of skilled machinists and arsenal leaders at America’s cannon and mortar factory. Today’s apprentices earn a two year degree in advanced manufacturing technology at Hudson Valley Community College while concurrently working at WVA.

This morning, we gathered with our partners in Federal, State and County government in honoring the life and service of Donald Yetman at the Rensselaer County Honor a Deceased Veteran ceremony held at the county offices building in East Greenbush. Yetman served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1968 and then continued his service with the New York Army National Guard from 1977 to 1999 where he retired as a 1st Sgt. Yetman also climbed through the ranks as a member of the Postal Service reaching the title of Post Master.

We thank the Yetman family for sharing Donald’s remarkable life of service to our community and nation.

This morning, arsenal Commander Col. Jason Schultz and Fire Chief John Whipple visited some of our mutual aid partners in our community. The pair stopped by fire departments in Watervliet, Cohoes, Green Island and Troy. Each year, through our mutual aid agreement with community partners, the Watervliet Arsenal Fire Department trains with multiple departments and assists in fire calls in the community. Last year, responded to 364 mutual aid calls.

- last night we joined our community in participating in National Night Out at the city pool in Watervliet. The event included various agencies, organizations and free food and pool access.

National Night Out is an annual community building campaign held on the first Tuesday of August that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

Today we joined our partners in Federal, State and local government in honoring the life and service of John Leo Dwyer, Jr. at the Albany County Honor a Veteran ceremony held at the Zaloga American Legion Post. John served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II. John spent most of his wartime service at Leyte, Philippines where he received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon as well as the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, American Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon.

Following the war, John went on to serve many roles including his role as Deputy Commissioner of the former Ann Lee nursing home in Albany County.

We thank the Dwyer family for sharing John's life of service with our community.

Yesterday, WVA Commander Col. Schultz and leadership had the privilege to host a visit by Mr. Mark Colley, Senior Executive Service, Executive Director U.S. Army Tank-automotive & Armaments Command Integrated Logistics Support Center, and Mr. Anthony Sebasto, Senior Executive Service, U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center Executive Director Enterprise and Systems Integration Center. Mr. Colley and Mr. Sebasto were here to discuss the latest developments of a key weapon system produced here.

This morning, we joined our leaders in Federal, State and County government to honor and remember the life and service of Francis A. Piche. Piche served in the U.S. Navy during the final days of World War II aboard the USS Oklahoma City, a Cleveland-class light cruiser. The Oklahoma City and her crew supported operations in the Okinawa Campaign and later air operations against Japanese forces. Following the war, Piche married his wife of more than 58 years, Audrey, and raised a family of six children.

We thank the Piche family for sharing Francis' life and service with our community.

This morning we joined Federal, State, County and local leaders to honor the life and service of Patrick Ellis. Ellis served during World War II in the U.S. Army with the 2nd Armored Division in North Africa, Italy and Germany. Among his awards and decorations were the Bronze Star (2), Purple Heart (2), and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

We thank the Ellis family for sharing Patrick’s remarkable life and service to our nation.
