Aluminum pour at Wisconsin Makers Nov. 18
Wisconsin Makers will host its first-ever aluminum pour on Saturday, Nov. 18.
The public is invited to this family-friendly event at the regional makerspace, located at 200 E. Clay St. in Whitewater.
The event will be similar to the past cast iron pours, except organizers will be pouring aluminum, which has very different properties. It melts at a lower temperature, is lighter, is silver in color and does not rust.
Spectators are welcome to watch the “pour team” — Teresa “Tree” Lind, a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater lecturer of art and design, and her students and alumni — melt aluminum in an outdoor furnace and then fill sand scratch molds with the liquid metal.
The aluminum will be poured starting at noon, with castings completed by mid-afternoon.
The per-person cost is $25. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Make your own casting
Members of the public wishing to make their own casting may buy a scratch mold square to personalize with their design that day, starting at 9 a.m. They must be completed by 11:30 a.m.
Persons wishing to get a head start on their design may attend a scratch mold workshop at the makerspace Friday, Nov. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m.
If participants would rather to do their artwork at home, they may purchase scratch molds beforehand at Binning and Dickens Insurance, 319 W. Center St., Whitewater, during weekday business hours.
“We are very excited to be hosting our first-ever aluminum pour,” said Wisconsin Makers President Al Jewer. “We have held cast-iron pours in the spring for six years and they have been a lot of fun. This is a wonderful opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art.”

Recently, a teen patron came in with a Barbie that her dog had chewed, and she wanted to see if we could help repair it. After working with a Library staff member, they settled on 3D printing a cast. They found a cast and crutches design for a full-size Barbie, the staff member resized the file and they printed some for the doll. The patron was so happy her Barbie was repaired and plans to return to make a prosthetic arm for another doll.

Teamwork makes the dream work and when you’re dreaming and creating with molten iron you need a strong cohesive team! 🔥 If you missed it, Saturday was the 5th annual Wisconsin Makers makerspace iron pour that our friend and fellow maker Pete organized. Here are some more videos of the “pour team” of Teresa “Tree” Lind, a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater lecturer of art and design, and her students in action melting cast iron in an outdoor furnace. They filled sand scratch molds with the molten metal and it was amazing to see them in action, they were awesome! You could feel the heat from the sidelines and we could only imagine how hot it was where the pour team was standing. We’re so glad that Pete put this together and invited us. We know he was watching from maker heaven. It was so exciting, fascinating, and educational, a true maker event! 🛠⚙️

Saturday was the 5th annual Wisconsin Makers makerspace iron pour that our friend and fellow maker Pete organized. It was exiting to have it today since it’s be on hiatus for 2 years due to the pandemic. We know Pete was smiling from Maker heaven and must have helped get the great weather for the event. We watched the “pour team”, Teresa “Tree” Lind, a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater lecturer of art and design, and her students — melt cast iron in an outdoor furnace and then fill sand scratch molds with the molten metal. It was so amazing to see this in person! You could feel the heat, smell the molten metal, and the energy that went into this was contagious. We’re so glad that Pete put this together and invited us. It was so exciting, fascinating, and educational, a true maker event! We missed you Pete and are grateful that you brought so many makers together. 🛠⚙️
Our maker friend Pete was so excited to be able to have this event again and we know he would be happy that it’s happening. This will be a fun and unique event, we hope to see you there! ⚒️
The maker community has lost one of it’s champions this week. We learned of Pete’s passing and it’s been a shock, several of us were just talking to him a couple of weeks ago about makerspace programs for the summer and his upcoming iron pour he was so excited about. We’re grateful that we had the opportunity to get to know Pete as a fellow maker and a friend. He has been an inspiration to so many of us with his passion for making and makerspaces. He was there as an advocate for makerspaces and maker education, was ready to help out fellow makers, and always found a way to make us laugh. Pete, loved to show people around the Wisconsin Makers community makerspace in Whitewater, where he served as President. He would happily spend hours talking about the makerspace and answer any questions. We’re going to miss you, we’re so sad that you’re gone. We hope you’re in the ultimate makerspace with all the tools, supplies, equipment, time, and energy to create, tinker, make all the things, and laugh. 🛠⚙️
Our hearts, thoughts, and sincere condolences go out to Pete’s wife and his family.

Happy Pi Day from all of us at the MCL!
We took a tour of the Milwaukee Makerspace buildings today and it was great seeing all of the maker projects being worked on, the wide variety of tools and workspaces, and learning about how the makerspace operates. We met a lot of makers, had good conversations, and came away feeling inspired. A special thank you to Markus for spending a lot of time with us today showing us around Norwich and answering questions. Thank you to Wolfgang for welcoming us to Lenox and the impromptu tour, and to the other makers we met who stopped to explain what they were working on. Such a fun way to spend a Saturday!

What is the "Waukesha Makerspace: Just Keep Making"? 🤔 Great question, glad you asked! 😃 It's a community makerspace where makers can come together to get to know each other, share ideas, and learn from each other. We want to provide a space for people to use equipment they may not have access to or the room for at home. It's also a way to share equipment (like the wood lathe in the picture) and supplies that are no longer used, or you don't have room for at home but want to see them used by fellow creative makers! We're setting up our new space and are looking forward to this being a place for makers in our community!
Makey is excited and ready to welcome everyone to our new space! 🤖 Hope you can join us for our Family & Friends soft opening event on Saturday, February 26th, 1-4 pm.
