My name is Ben Opel, and I am running for Waunakee School Board!

I am married and have two children attending Prairie Elementary School, so I have vested long-term interest in helping this school district thrive and be the best it can be.

When you ask most people why they moved to Waunakee, they tell you they moved here for the school district. In talking with many parents in the district, they are overwhelmingly saying that, in exchange for the significant tax dollars they pay to live here, they want to see the district re-prioritizing the following:

• Focusing on academics
• Exposing children to opportunities in the trade fields
• Teaching real-life skills, such as budgeting
• Partnering with local employers to provide more work and co-op opportunities

I am currently Director of a Cybersecurity Operations Center as well as Major in the USMC Reserves. I am a Naval Academy Graduate and have been an Active-Duty Marine Corps Officer for 12 years with combat deployment to Afghanistan.

My entire career has been predicated on providing sound leadership in uncertain and unpredictable circumstances. I’m responsible at any given moment for the mentorship, training, well-being, career, family stability (and at times, the very lives) of large numbers of people. I am expected to make correct decisions with sound judgement in situations wherein I may have limited information or not have the full context of the situation.

I am prepared to devote as much time and energy as it takes to oversee our school district and take it to the next level.
