✏️ 🎨 It’s National Arts in Education Week!

This weeklong event was passed by Congress in 2010 to celebrate the benefits of arts in education and strengthen the importance of equitable access to arts education for all.

Here at the Center for the Visual Arts, we offer a variety of educational programming and opportunities to ensure everyone has a pathway to the benefits of arts education. This year, we’ve been able to grant 25 full scholarships to both youth and adult students for our classes and camps, create our program Littlest Artist for children ages 0 - 4, host free art projects in our galleries, and supply art projects throughout the community!

This year we also look forward to launching Art for the Ageless, a program where students of all abilities are welcome to explore their artistic identity while connecting with others in a supportive community setting. Students will be encouraged to practice their creativity through different weekly projects in a variety of mediums.

The Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP) encourages nonprofessional, student, and emerging artists to create and exhibit their work across Wisconsin. It is for people who have a serious interest in art, and create art for the love of art. WRAP originated as an outreach program of UW-Madison but is now administered by the Association of Wisconsin Artists.

Littlest Artists will be canceled for tomorrow due to cleaning and scheduled maintenance in the Classroom Studio. Our plan was to hold the event outdoors, but it seems like the weather has plans of it's own!☔

Artist Statement

"My art is inspired by the beauty of the natural world around me. I work with wools and other animal fibers, both new and repurposed, to capture the vibrant colors and swirling shapes that I observe. I often dye these fibers by hand to better control my palette and emulate the colors I observe. I am also exploring practical ways to add beauty to life. It is thrilling to create something beautiful that has a useful purpose.

This work and my art practice mark the continued evolution of my skills and experiences. Since childhood I have stitched, sewn, drawn, and painted. My ability to observe closely and make inferences and conclusions about these observations has been honed by an advanced education in biology. It’s so exciting to pull all these experiences together to create new works".

𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧. Art by the Foot is an annual juried art show of small works, measuring 12in or smaller in dimension. These small works are the perfect addition to or start to your art collection. 100 works of art in various mediums will be accepted, and awards for juror choice will be given at the reception on November 15, 2024. Peoples Choice Awards will be announced in the final week of the exhibit.

The 𝙇𝙤𝙛𝙩 𝙂𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮, the CVA hosts 9+ shows a year featuring local organizations and schools. Artist Statement:

"I have enjoyed playing with watercolor for over 50 years.

My objective as an artist is to create pleasing, well-rendered yet original artwork primarily in transparent watercolor technique. I depend on strong drawing skills and traditional art training. From this foundation, I try to create special effects and moods through manipulation of media and composition. I am drawn to a large variety of subjects and enjoy rendering the subject as well as experimenting with different characteristics of this media that make each application unique. My special interest is portraiture, capturing the physical likeness and the personality of the subject, a real challenge in any media particularly watercolor.

I am always trying to improve my techniques with classes, study and experimentation. I have earned signature status in these organizations: Transparent Watercolor Society of America; Watercolor Honor Society; Illinois Watercolor Society; Rocky Mountain National Watermedia; and Wisconsin Watercolor Society".

Due to the weather and cancellation of the night market, we are postponing our free workshop tonight! Visit us during the Historic Landmark Mural Unveiling and Celebration on Saturday, September 7th from 4-7pm to participate in the workshop. We'll be painting recycling cans and making wildflower seed bombs with clay while celebrating the completion of the new mural!

The CVA Galleries are Closed Wed 8/14 - Sat 8/17 as we work to install new Exhibits for you to enjoy! We re-open Wed 8/21 with three new exhibits for you to enjoy; in the Caroline S Mark Gallery 𝙂𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜: 𝘼 𝙋𝙤𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘼𝙧𝙩 𝙀𝙭𝙝𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙩, the Duachaka Her Solo Exhibit 𝙉𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙣 is in the Vault Gallery, and Wausau WRAP in the Loft Gallery.

A lot goes into installing new shows:
1. De-install the last show.
2. Artwork is picked up or shipped home, and artwork that is purchased goes to its new home!
3. Curating! Each show is arranged by our curator to make a visually appealing display and to help tell the story of the show.
4. Install! We have a team of trained volunteers who help our curator hang the artwork.
5. Title cards are installed next to the work so visitors know the title, medium, artist, and price.
6. Lighting a show is a skill that takes practice and patience. It's a balancing act of lights and shadows!
7. Signage helps you know the title of the show, who sponsored the show, and who juried the show!

Welcome to the team, Lily! Lily is a Junior at Wausau West Highschool and just started her role today as Youth Mural Fellow at the historic Landmark building. Lily’s here to assist our mural artist, Lindsey, in the ex*****on of the new large scale mural project. The Center for Visual Arts is committed to providing platforms and opportunities for artists of all ages, and we are so thrilled to bring Lily on board for this incredible community project.
