Wauwatosa is investing $5.2 million in an important community center -- and about 80% of that is through grants and private fundraising. The Muellner Building serves senior meals, hosts an active curling club, and welcomes community members as a rental space.

Probably the coolest features you'll see are the historical renovations. We’ve always valued historical preservation while providing the necessary maintenance to our buildings. But we're also modernizing the building with the addition of solar panels, upgraded HVAC systems, and a modern kitchen in the Firefly Room.

We anticipate reopening the space in November 2024.

Join us at a city meeting this week. Submit an eComment or contact your elected official with your thoughts.

Highlights of agenda items:
🔹 Financial Affairs Committee will consider allocating ARPA contingency funds to construct the proposed bicycle pump track at the new city park.
🔹 Also at Financial Affairs, the Finance Director will give a presentation about the city's general fund in the next five years. Over the five year period, expenditures grow on average 2.5% while revenues grow only 2.1%. The only way to permanently fix the gap is to change the trend lines themselves - increase revenue growth, limit expenditure increases, or preferably, a combination of both.
🔹 Did you know that construction will likely be coming to North Avenue from Met to Wee Lane to 73rd Street in 2027? Wauwatosa earned a state grant to pay for 80% of the costs. The Financial Affairs Committee is considering a contract related to the design of water mains and sanitary sewers.
🔹 Government Affairs will discuss proposed changes to the Common Council's calendar, impacting meeting time and frequency.

Making plans for the Fourth of July in Wauwatosa? Here's what's happening:

No earlier than 6:00 am - send someone out to reserve the best parade spots. It's one of the largest in Wisconsin! That person should also get first pick of the donuts and coffee. 🍩

9:00 am - Parade starts at Swan Blvd and Menomonee River Parkway heading north to North Avenue. Then, it goes east and ends at 80th and North Avenue.

12 - 3 pm - Family fun in the Library/City Hall parking lot. Bring one non-perishable food item to register decorated bikes, trikes, wagons, etc. for prizes. Your donation will benefit the Tosa Cares Food pantry. Also - Espirit Pom & Dance will perform.

6:00 pm - Tosa Tonight concert at the Rotary Stage in Hart Park.

*Note - there are no fireworks in Wauwatosa on July 4. Join us on August 7 for Tosa Night Out, a concert by Tosa Tonight, and fireworks.

The City of Wauwatosa continues to make strides in developing its comprehensive plan.

We've hosted in-person events, a survey, online map tool, DIY small group discussion kits, interviews, and public meetings. We appreciate everyone's participation so far! If you're curious what your neighbors have said so far, look for the "Existing Conditions" document at wauwatosa.net/plan under the documents tab.

The next step in this process is a working meeting of the Steering Committee, scheduled for July 8. While this meeting is open to the public, attendees should note that this session will focus on the ongoing work and discussions necessary to shape the draft comprehensive plan. There is public comment at this meeting, but it's mostly a working meeting of the Steering Committee.

We expect drafts of the comprehensive plan later in Fall, and that will be a great time for the community to provide feedback to ensure the final plan reflects the collective vision for Wauwatosa's future.

Introducing our new sensory zone for the Fourth of July parade! In addition to our annual Fourth of July celebrations, we are including a designated space with minimized lights and sounds for individuals with disabilities and those who prefer a less stimulating environment.

Be on the look out for this sign located between the blocks of 80th to 81st on North Avenue where these areas will have no flashing lights, loud music, or sirens. This initiative is geared towards individuals who are sensitive to sensory overload, including those with autism, PTSD, or other conditions that make such environments challenging. With this thoughtful addition, everyone can join in and enjoy the festivities comfortably.

Along with the sensory zone, the parade organizers have arranged for accessible parking with a number of reserved spaces at 92nd and North Avenue (behind the bank building). This initiative was volunteer-led by the Wauwatosa Commission for Persons and Disabilities with support from the Civic Celebration Commission. For more information, visit: https://www.wauwatosa.net/Home/Components/News/News/3148/17.

The “right-hand slide” strikes again. We want to change this driving behavior, and we need your help.

We received feedback that cars have been passing on the right on Glenview Avenue near Portland Avenue. It is illegal and highly unsafe to pass when pedestrians are crossing. Our engineers placed these barrels on Glenview Avenue to help minimize the right-hand slide.

We’ll monitor this location to see how these temporary barrels affect traffic, particularly during school drop-offs and pick-ups.
