Very helpful advice on recycling after this gift giving holiday season. Note the comments on string lights and wrapping paper. And you can always get questions answered on waste wizard wauwatosa.net/wizard
Quiz time. What holiday item can you recycle? It's a tricky one!
Technically, an egg nog carton is the only item on this list that can go in your regular recycling.
String lights can be recycled at a special collection site. The Milwaukee County Zoo is offering a free collection box through January 7. Some local hardware stores may also collect string lights.
Most wrapping paper is not recyclable.
Popcorn strings can go in the garbage.
What other holiday items are you curious about? Use wauwatosa.net/wizard to type in the name of an item to see if it can go in recycling, garbage, or compost.
We also encourage you to consider what items might be repurposed or upcycled.
As we near the end of 2023, I wanted to report some very impressive stats from this year's summit, held last September. In addition to over 200 attendees visiting our 24 exhibits and 2 breakout presentations, our recycling collections kept the following out of our landfills:
- 41,497 lbs household hazardous waste
- 21,784 lbs electronics
- 4300 lbs scrap metal
- 10,720 lbs shredded paper
- 4891 lbs textiles
- 185 lbs medicine
- 35 bikes
Plus half a ga***rd bag of toothbrushes and empty toothpaste tubes and several carloads of nonperishable food and personal care items
As a reminder, you can always bring your hazardous waste any day to MMSD's 3 permanent collection sites: https://www.mmsd.com/what-you-can-do/home-haz-mat-collection
and your electronics to RD Refrigerant Depot's permanent site at 5311 S 9th St https://appliancerecycling.net/electronic-recycling
And after opening your gifts next week, remember to put the wrapping paper in your GREEN garbage cart (NOT recycling) www.wauwatosa.net/wizard
Happy holidays!
