as my sister likes to say, “Jet Boil! Where have you been all my life?!” As the daughter of a father who loved to used esoteric European camping gear I can heartily attest that water boiled on a Svea stove comes way slower and harder that this little gem can deliver. 😂 and then there is Blur Bottle instant vs Cafe Francais. LOL!

When you are ok with someone walking all over you! 😂 East West Healing Arts Institute students continued their exploration of compressional work and foot walking in the Thai massage tradition. Heartwood co-founder, Laura Hulke, guided students through a practice of compression, treatment of muscle groups under shortening, reciprocal inhibition and the use of movement and contrasting sensation to produce nervous system distraction. The ultimate outcome was a feeling of ease in the giver’s body mind and deep relief and bliss in the receiver’s body.
We had a stellar lunar New Year’s Day at East West Healing Arts Institute sharing Chai Qiao and an Introduction to Thai massage with this group’s students. Heartwood’s co-owner, Laura, has taught at EWHAI since 2019. The students were delighted to learn how to work off the table, use their feet instead of their hands and settle into a place of working from ease versus effort. After more than five hours of exchanging compressional massage work there were many eruptions of spontaneous joy and laughter and plenty of sighs of relaxation and bliss. We are grateful to share these practices with massage students and other bodywork practitioners.
Waiting till the last minute to buy a gift session for someone? Please don’t! We will be taking and fulfilling orders for gift sessions until 5 pm on Friday, December 22. After that we will serve you in the new year. The most expedient way is to purchase a session directly yourself from our MindBody online store (if you read this after Friday you can STILL gift from our store, but we won’t be able to respond if you run into any speed bumps during purchase). Gift sessions are good for 24 months. Or if you have questions or aren’t sure how to buy, submit a note to us on our contact form. Thanks much! We can’t believe 2023 is drawing to a close!
Todd and Laura are hunkering down for three days of neural manipulation training with Gail Wetzler of . They are so grateful to study with the Institute and grow their knowledge of nerves of the upper limb and effective treatment strategies for neural disfunction.

Decompression or cupping therapy time! Not everything needs to be dug out with deep pressure (sorry deep tissue massage junkies!). Some things need more SPACE. The vacuum provided by the cups can allow greater mobility between structures inside the body that must slide and glide past one another for pain free movement to happen. Curious to experience this? Ask your therapist.
Thursday feels..who else is with us? 🤣🤣🤣 Have an amazing day! 🧡

Our massage therapists Kate and Tim just spent some wonderful time in Thailand training and relaxing. Enjoy a few photos and reflections that they share from their trip
“During our trip we learned that Thai massage is an ancient practice that is shared and practiced throughout the world.
Over the span of our trip, we learned by observing, that it’s a part of Thailand’s every day life. It’s everywhere you look.
Our training reiterated the importance of slow, methodical work and the benefits of this specific style of massage.
Key Points We Learned:
1. Techniques using our elbows, knees, and feet as tools
2. How to identify energy blockages
3. Use of ergonomic practices to maintain physical strength throughout the massage, which ultimately results in an excellent session for both the therapist and the receiver
Bodywork is an art and we are thrilled to incorporate these new techniques into our practice at Heartwood.” ~Kate and Tim Czaja
