I thought I should do something of a PSA .
I recently received a call from a man that asked me how much a "premium setup" costs ?
I was curious and asked what a premium setup is.He proceeded to explain that he had inquired about getting his guitar setup at big box retail guitar store, that I will leave un named.
Apparently he was offered a "normal" setup & a "premium " setup,he told me that the premium setup was about $125...
Here's the Public Service Anouncement part of this rant.
There is NO PREMIUM SETUP, there's just a setup. If you pay for a premium setup, the only thing getting setup is you !
A setup (for guitar/bass guitar ) consists of this.....
1) Remove the old strings and thoroughly clean the body, neck & headstock.
2) Polish the frets, clean and oil the fingerboard
3) Check every bolt, nut & screw on the instrument ( jack and/or jack plate, strap buttons, tuners neck bolts any loose pots) etc...
4) Restring the instrument and proceed to make all the necessary adjustments to make the instrument play as well as it can play.
This adjusting includes the neck adjustment (relief ),intonation, pickup heights, string height and nut slot depths.
Also,if the pots are noisy I run electronic cleaner through them.
I do this every time,to every instrument, no exceptions !
THIS is a setup, there are NO shortcuts.Anything less than what I have just described is not a setup, the only thing I could offer to make it "premium " would be to offer whipped cream doughnuts.

She came out pretty good considering the condition that it came in like.
Here's a pic of the finished product with vintage style replacement tuners.
This guitar was missing a couple of braces, thanks to my cousin (Johnny Taylor) I had some donor braces from one of his guitars that was destroyed in an F5 tornado !
I tried to recreate the original brace shape into the donor pieces.
Also, here's pics of the inside after gluing and cleating.
Critters had Ben living in it (eating, pooping & peeing in it).
The missing piece of the top was still glued to the fingerboard so I had to remove it from the fingerboard and reattach it to the top.
Here's a pic of all the cracks & missing pieces glued and cleated back in place.
The neck was broken @ the heel, the side had a very long split and most of the braces were detached.
It's been quite a while since I've posted anything new here,so here's some pics from a guitar I repaired several years ago.

The original bridge and braces were reused, the bridge plate was toast,I had to make a new one.
The binding was not too hard,it's two pieces. The cutaway is a separate piece.
Finally finished, this has been a LOT of work. This guitar was so badly abused but it sounds pretty good if I do say so myself !
Well, this has been a long time coming but it's nearing completion. The 1950's Gibson CF100.I cleaned all the hardened glue out of it,repaired a LOT of broken kerfing, made 2 new braces to replace the missing ones, made a new top,new with new binding.
I was able to save the original top braces and bridge. The second fingerboard inlay was missing so I replaced it with as close a match as I could find. There are "before pics" a little farther down.
For sale...1997 Hendrix tribute.

I keep getting request from folks wanting to know my "price range",i have some specific prices for some specific repairs but i will try to give a "price range" the best i can.My price range would start at the lowest price, which would be for advice concerning a given repair so that would be zero and my most expensive price, which would be for some(as yet) unknown repair procedure,i will put a hypothetical price of $10,000.So my price range must be from zero to $10,000...see me(with your instrument)for a specific price on any given repair...;-)
This is what it looks like after"stitching"it together with super glue.I will use it to rough out the shape of the new top,and to copy the brace pattern.
This is the top, after removal.I did'nt worry too much about damaging it...it was already toast!
Well, the inside is disgusting at the least.Besides being a mouse motel,It also looks like someone poured a bottle of glue inside the guitar and then "rolled" it around to coat the insides.
Here is another view of the top.It also has multiple breaks in the back, which will all have to be repaired. This top is damaged beyond saving, mainly because of the soundhole,if not for that i would have repaired the top. This guitar will be getting an upgrade to 4A spruce top.I will be using all the original bracing, bridge and bridgeplate.
I think the subject of instrument repair is probably fairly boring to most folks, but being a guitar player makes it all the more interesting(for me).
I get a lot of very interesting instruments in,so i cant' show them all,but this one,i think,is going to be an "interesting challenge"at the least.I will post pics as it progresses.
This is a Gibson CF100,produced from 1950-1958,this one is pre 55',as it has the tapered headstock paddle, which Gibson stopped doing after about mid 55'.As you can see it has had a tough childhood.Someone "grafted" a new soundhole to it and then later the top was crushed, also somewhere thereabouts, mice found it to be a suitable living space!
Terry
Jim with the newly refinished Guild F15-CE (I called it my "rescue" guitar). Great job, Jim! It's beautiful again and plays better than ever!
