Brynn Cicippio, LMFT & Associates

I work closely with clients who want to be true to themselves without any hesitation, guilt, or shame.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in substance use, I understand how addiction influences the members of a family system and plays out over multiple generations. In addition to individuals raised in addicted homes, I also have extensive experience helping those currently struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. Together, we can move you toward a life of serenity, understanding, and sobriety where you gain experience confidence, self acceptance, and peace of mind.

The main point of the text is to develop affective calmness and use less words when communicating.

Dr. Russell Barkley's advice is clear: "Act, don’t yak." Using fewer words and staying calm and assertive will have more influence than speaking from emotional dysregulation. Develop affective calmness for better outcomes.

Familiar doesn't mean healthy. A lot of things feel familiar... doesn't mean it's healthy and safe for you.

Familiar simply means you have experienced it before. You can probably predict the outcome to a certain degree. You might know when its coming, what its going to look like.

Triggers to drink, manipulative relationships, marital conflict, challenges to your sobriety, unsupportive family. All might be familiar, none are healthy.

Don't let others affect your recovery!

While relationships are an important role in your recovery! Your recovery is YOURS and no one else's. Deciding which relationships are healthy for you is your responsibility alone. Just like you wouldn't credit someone else for the hard work it takes to get sober and on the recovery path, you also can't blame others for relapse.

Recovery for self or to take care of everyone else?

Taking care of yourself first is realizing that you're also important. It is important to not constantly ignore your needs and the things that make you feel good.

Recovery requires a level of vulnerability that addiction has been trying to bury.

Recovery is a total lifestyle change, from ditching unhealthy friendships to healing shame.

Vulnerability permits honesty at the most raw level. It's uncomfortable, it can feel painful, and most importantly, it can be life changing.

Quote from Brynn Cicippio, LMFT:

"It can be tempting to think of our how our lives would be different if we did not experience trauma. Try to remember there is no such thing as a perfect life, perfect parents or families, or perfect people. We all wish there could be something different."

Healthy relationships can be derailed for many reasons including miscommunication, assumptions, addiction, not feeling appreciated, lack of trust, affairs, good intentions with poor executions, and one-sided decision making.

Couples therapy can help get your relationship to a place where both partners feel loved, satisfied, trusted, and valued.

Couples in therapy can expect that both sides will be heard. The therapist will help the couple develop empathy for one another and to engage in specific exercises to accurately listen and respond to one another. Working with trained marriage and family therapists, the couple can expect to be held as the expert in their relationship. No two relationships are the same.

My recovery must come first so that everything I love in life does not have to come last.

Recovery from anything is possible when you have honesty, boundaries, self-love, and balance.

Never lose your self-respect for someone who doesn't care about your feelings and emotions. Self-respect is all about valuing yourself and feeling good about who you are, no matter what.

In a healthy relationship, both parties should respect and treat each other right.

02/26/2024

Self-esteem that is externally rooted is like a house of cards - it will come crashing down in the blink of an eye.

Your value doesn't decrease based on someone's inability to see your worth.

It's essential to remember that your value as an individual is not diminished by someone else's inability to recognize it.

Your worth is essential and doesn't fluctuate based on the perceptions or limitations of others.
