We are taking a walk on the Waynesboro Greenway

On this day, ninety-three years ago, ground was first broken at Shenandoah National Park!

Survey work, conducted under joint supervision of the Bureau of Public Roads and the National Park Service, began in January of that year. Because the land had not yet been accepted by the federal government, a 100-foot right-of-way strip was obtained by purchase and donation in order to proceed with construction work.

Primary work would be completed by 1933, with final touches and opening to traffic occurring in 1934.
