Our Story Here in Waynesville, NC

Remember Our Veterans – One Wreath At A Time
GreenHill Veterans Cemetery, Waynesville, NC

In Waynesville, there is a very vibrant group, that for the past 3 years, has been building a presence at GreenHill Cemetery for participation in the National Wreaths Across America Event. The local American Legion Post (47) has partnered with the local Knights of Columbus Council (15085) to fund raise and coordinate the event. In 2017, thanks to the generous support of local businesses, organizations, and donors - for the first time we were able to sponsor nearly 500 wreaths; and were able to place a wreath on the grave of all those buried in the Veterans Section of GreenHill Cemetery. Our goal is to continue with this success.

Pictured above, Board Members from American Legion Post 47 in Waynesville receive a Certificate of Appreciation for the Post’s support of the Wreaths Across America Program.

THE WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA STORY

Wreaths Across America™ began as The Arlington Wreath project started by Morrill Worcester in 1992, with the donation and laying of 5,000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery.

It was a relatively obscure event until 2005, when a photo of the stones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow circulated around the internet. The project received national attention.

In 2006 more than 150 state and national cemeteries held wreath laying ceremonies simultaneously.

By 2008, more than 300 locations held wreath-laying ceremonies in every state, Puerto Rico and 24 overseas cemeteries. Over 100,000 wreaths were placed on veterans graves and more than 60,000 volunteers participated.

In 2010, over 220,000 memorial wreaths at 545 locations in the United States and beyond. Including ceremonies at the Pearl Harbor Memorial, as well as Bunker Hill, Valley Forge and the sites of the 9/11 tragedies.

In 2014 a total of 716,000 wreaths were placed over the U.S.

They accomplished this with help from hundreds of fundraising groups, corporate contributions, and donations of trucking, shipping and thousands of helping hands.

The mission of Wreaths Across America™ is simple: “Remember, Honor and Teach.” The importance of Remembering those who served in the military – “REMEMBER the fallen”, to Honor their service and sacrifice “HONOR those who serve: including their families who sacrifice, and Teach others to do the same – “TEACH all generations,” the value of their service and price of our freedom.

The wreath-laying is now held each year on the second Saturday in December and in 2008, was unanimously voted by the U.S. Congress as “Wreaths Across America™ Day.”

By offering sponsorships to the public, Wreaths Across America™ hopes that one day every veteran’s resting place will be adorned with a wreath for the holiday season. It is possible to honor your hero, buried at Greenhill Veterans Cemetery, by sponsoring a $15 wreath.
