Closing out with a blog about the importance of Minnesota's pollinators!
Importance of Minnesota's Pollinators Minnesota’s Pollinators Minnesota is made up of a variety of different ecosystems, including prairies, forests, wetlands, and urban gardens. Minnesota’s pollinators ensure that these habitats continue to survive and flourish. Minnesota's pollinators include insects, bats, and birds. We are going...
Butterflies are nearsighted and need to rely on ultraviolet colors to find mates and the right flowers. You can help butterflies ‘see’ by planting flowers in larger groupings of single colors or single plant varieties.
Hummingbirds regularly visit over 1,000 flowers per day! Though they cannot smell, they have great color vision and are able to see ‘near’ ultraviolet rays. Colors such as red, pink and orange stand out the most to them.
Nectar feeding bats are solely responsible for the pollination of over 500 species of plants alone! Some of these include mangos, bananas, avocados, figs, and agave.
It’s National Pollinator week! 13 years ago the Senate approved that one week in the month of June be used to both celebrate pollinators and bring attention to their rapidly declining populations. 🐝🦋🌸
Ground bees are one of the first pollinators to emerge in the spring and are only active for 4-6 weeks! These bees are solitary, meaning that each hole is occupied by only one female and her offspring. Why does this matter? They do not feel the need to ‘defend their nest’ and will usually hide in their burrow if we are around. The bees flying at ground level are the males looking to reproduce. Male bees do not have stingers. 🌸🐝
As snow continues to melt, you may notice significant lawn damage from either moles or voles. It is important to walk down mole tunnels before contacting a company to see if it is still active. Many times, the mole has either moved on or was dinner to a fox or coyote.
Fun Fact Friday - Worker ants will travel up to 300 ft in their search of food to bring back to their colony! These members only make up about 10% of an entire colony.
Ants live inside their nests, consuming stored protein, fats and carbs to live through the winter. Radiant heated floors can wake them from their dormancy, causing them to enter your home. They think spring is here, and they need to get back to work!🐜
