Did you know that Protein is a vital macronutrient that’s essential for many of the body’s physiological functions. It’s a building block for muscles, bones, cartilage, skin, and blood, and it helps the body heal and repair cells. Protein also helps maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, and it can serve as an energy source when the body can’t use carbohydrates or fat.
⬇️Here are some of the benefits of getting enough protein:
⚪️Muscle growth
Protein is essential for building muscle, and when combined with resistance training, it can help you gain strength and muscle mass.
⚪️Bone health
Protein supports bone structure and helps the body absorb calcium, which is important for bone mineral density.
⚪️Immune system
Protein helps the body create antibodies to fight infections and illnesses, and the amino acids in collagen can increase the number of immune cells.
⚪️Blood sugar balance
Protein can help prevent insulin spikes, which can cause energy slumps and sugar cravings.
⚪️Satiety
Protein can help you feel full for longer, which can help prevent hunger pangs and overeating.
A good way to calculate if you’re getting enough protein is to take your body weight and multiply it by .36.
For Example, if you weigh 136lbs you will multiply 136x.36. That equals 49 grams of protein each day.

☀️ Benefits of Vitamin D ☀️
What are some easy ways to increase your vitamin D?
1. Spend time in sunlight
Vitamin D is often referred to as “the sunshine vitamin” because the sun is one of the best sources of this nutrient.
Your skin hosts a type of cholesterol that functions as a precursor to vitamin D. When this compound is exposed to UV-B radiation from the sun, it becomes vitamin D.
2. Consume fatty fish and seafood
Fatty fish and seafood are among the richest natural food sources of vitamin D.
In fact, a 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving of canned salmon can provide up to 386 IU of vitamin D — about 50% of the RDI
3. Eat more mushrooms
Mushrooms are the only vegetarian source of vitamin D.
Like humans, mushrooms can make their own vitamin D upon exposure to UV light. Humans produce a form of vitamin D known as D3 or cholecalciferol, whereas mushrooms produce D2 or ergocalciferol.
4. Include egg yolks in your diet
Egg yolks are another source of vitamin D that you can easily add to your routine.
Like many other natural food sources, yolks have variable vitamin D content.
5. Take a supplement
For many people, taking a vitamin D supplement may be the best way to ensure adequate intake.
Vitamin D exists in two main biological forms — D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). Typically, D2 comes from plants and D3 from animals.
Research suggests that D3 may be significantly more effective at raising and maintaining overall vitamin D levels than D2, so look for a supplement with this form.
Additionally, it’s important to purchase high-quality supplements that have been independently tested. We offer High Quality Vitamin D in our office. Need some? Give us a call to place your order. Don’t live near us? No worries! We ship directly to your door. 😘
Ever wonder when to take your supplements? Here’s a little cheat-sheet for you. ☀️

Did you know that the activation of vitamin D3 (animal sources) depends on magnesium?
☀️ Magnesium and vitamin D are two essential nutrients that are necessary for the physiologic functions of various organs and the immune system. All of the enzymes that metabolize active vitamin D require magnesium, which acts as a cofactor in the liver and kidneys’ enzymatic reactions. In other Words, the translation of vitamin D3 into the active vitamin D hormone called calcitriol can’t happen without magnesium.
Recent observational studies found that magnesium intake significantly interacts with vitamin D in relation to the risk of mortality, immune function, cognitive, and physical performance.
During the cold months, we highly recommend
‘increasing your vitamin D intake from foods sn’t and ensuring your sufficient magnesium levels

9 Foods That Fight Inflammation 💫
🫒• 1. Healthy Fats. Healthy fats, including
salmon, avocado, and olive oil, have been shown to be beneficial for inflammation. Oleocanthal, a phenolic compound found in olive oil, has beneficial effects on inflammation.
🍋• 2. Lemons. Lemons contain beneficial plant compounds, called bioflavonoids.
Bioflavonoids help boost lymph flow and strengthen blood vessels. They also neutralize free radicals, which help reduce swelling in the body.
🥦• 3. Cruciferous vegetables. Cruciferous vegetables contain high levels of sulfur. Sulfur helps fight back against free radicals. Sulforaphane is an antioxidant that helps fight inflammation. It does this by reducing cytokines in your body.
🍓• 4. Berries and cherries. Berries contain anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are compounds that can help reduce your risk of developing chronic disease. Cherries reduce levels of
CRP inflammatory markers. Plus, uric acid can prevent and help with painful bouts of gout.
🍠5. Sweet potato. Sweet potatoes contain resistant starch, which helps feed beneficial bacteria in the gut. This helps maintain balance in the mucous membranes in the gut.
Cyanidin and peonidin are responsible for anti-inflammatory properties in sweet potatoes.
🥕• 6. Carrots. Carrots are great at reducing inflammation. They are also rich in carotenoids, low on the glycemic index, and rich in insoluble fibers. They are also fantastic as one of the most beauty-enhancing vegetables.
🌶• 7. Turmeric. Turmeric contains bioactive compounds. The main one is curcumin. It is known for its high antioxidant and anti-
inflammatory properties.
🍍• 8. Pineapples. Pineapple contains the
enzyme bromelain, shown in studies to
reduce markers of inflammation. Studies also show that bromelain can decrease neutrophil
migration where acute inflammation is
present.
🌾• 9. Whole grains. Swap out refined
carbohydrates for whole grains. Oats contain antioxidants, avenanthramides, shown to lower blood pressure. Inflammation is typically found in those with high blood pressure. Brown rice contains phenolic acid and can decrease liver inflammation.
PROBIOTIC FOODS &
PREBIOTIC FOODS.
Probiotics vs Prebiotics: What’s the difference?
↘️Let’s break it down. ↙️
Although the names are almost the same
- just one letter difference- these two types of food are completely different, but both essential for gut health!
Probiotics are living bacteria and yeast that, for the most part, live in the intestinal tract.
This good bacteria helps to balance out the bad bacteria in the digestive system.
We ingest probiotics through foods and supplements.
On their own, probiotics have a limited effect.
That’s because they’re easily destroyed. In order to live, probiotics need food to feed on.
That’s where prebiotics come into play.
Prebiotics are not alive, rather they’re a form of fiber. Bacteria in the gut, including probiotics, digest fiber. Think of prebiotics as food for probiotics.
We also ingest prebiotics through food and supplements.
These foods are a source of GOOD BACTERIA that contribute to your gut health and keeping a happy microbiome.
Happy Saturday!!!
Don’t forget! We will not be in office next week, because we will be at sea! All voicemails and emails will be returned Feb 12th. We are sooo excited!!!!

How Healing From Within was established
Have you recently been diagnosed with an “autoimmune” condition? Have you spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars going from doctor to doctor, and there seems to be no solution except taking a pill that will mask your symptoms? The trouble with this, is one pill will lead to another, and then another and then another. Before long, you could even be taking medicine for side effects that are caused from the first medications and still be no better. In fact, you could be worse!
My name is Melody McClain, and I am Family Nurse Practitioner. I became a NP because I wanted to help people. However, I noticed while in my clinical rotations, that the doctors were not successfully able to help the difficult patients. They didn’t know what to do with them, except prescribe a pill to mask their symptoms and then refer them to another specialist. I actually had one doctor tell me I was taking too much time with his patients, that I needed to copy and paste in the patient’s electronic record and move on to the next. I was appalled. THIS was not why I went into medicine! I decided then and there that I would not work in conventional medicine, but open my own functional medicine practice. Thus, Healing From Within was established in 2016.
I also had a husband who was getting no better with conventional medicine. In fact, he was getting worse. He had a rheumatologist for his arthritis symptoms. He had a neurologist for his seizures. I kept asking…for 20 years…are these two not related? Surely they are! The doctors had no answers. Come to find out, I discovered he had underlying Lyme Disease. THIS was the cause for the autoimmune gouty arthritis and the unexplained seizures.
I had a daughter who, by the age of 10, had broken several bones in her body. The orthopedist we saw teased me that I was trying to get my own wing in his clinic. I would ask her pediatrician, “Why are her bones breaking so easily? Is there something wrong?” For years he would blow it off and tell me not to worry, that some kids are just clumsy. It took that daughter developing vitiligo at the age of 18 before I realized that her gut was not absorbing, her vitamin D levels were chronically low, and she had hypothyroid. The underlying cause of the autoimmune vitiligo and hypothyroid? Imbalanced gut flora. This could have been prevented if we would have known about functional medicine back then.
