Have you thought about the health of your brain?

Sure we may have an aim to protect our mental & emotional health but I mean the health of your brain...congnitive health!🧠

Witnessing my grandmother's decline with age having alzheimers & hearing stories over the years from my friends with parents stricken with demnsia, has me taking extra precausions.

1. Exercise regularly.

Daily physical exercise has been shown to prevent or postpone your risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. As little as 15 to 30 minutes a day can make a difference.

2. If you smoke, quit.

To***co use can harm all your organs, including your brain. But stopping now improves your chances for healthier brain function in the future, even if you’ve smoked for many years.

3. Take care of your heart.

A healthy brain requires a good cardiovascular system. If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or atrial fibrillation, follow your doctor’s advice.

4. Avoid a high-sugar diet.

High blood sugar can increase your risk for dementia, even without diabetes. So avoid highly sweetened foods like sodas and candy.

5. Keep your mind stimulated.

Games and puzzles are great. But also consider volunteer and social activities that keep you independent and engaged with friends and family. For example, learn new computer skills; participate on a board, in a book club, or dance group; or try gardening, crafts, or cooking.

6. Avoid certain drugs.

Talk to your doctor about your medication—both prescription and nonprescription. For brain health, you want to avoid dangerous interactions or being over-medicated.

7. Moderate or avoid alcohol.

Drinking has a stronger effect on our bodies as we age. Experts advise a limit of one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.

8. Prevent falls.

Falls can cause a head injury, broken bones, or other harm that triggers gradual or sudden loss of function. To avoid falling, practice balance and strength exercises. Beware that drinking and drugs can affect balance. And be careful: watch for uneven walking surfaces and cords that can trip you. Wear shoes or slippers with good soles. Avoid going barefoot or walking in stocking feet. If you bike or ski, wear a helmet.

10. Minimize stress.

Hormones secreted when you’re under stress have a stronger effect on older brains, challenging your ability to recover from emotional upset. So take change slowly and learn ways to cope with anxiety or tension.

11. Sleep well.

Inadequate sleep is linked to slower thinking and risk of dementia. Seven to nine hours a night is best. But be wary of sleep medications that can make cognitive problems worse. Instead, talk to your doctor about “sleep hygiene”—that is, habits to help your body settle down at bedtime.

3 Weight Loss Myths & the Truth
I'll admit, I used to believe these! Odds are, you have too...I plan to expose other myths in the future but for now here are 3m myths & the truth!

1. MYTH: All you need to do is be in a caloric deficit to lose weight.
TRUTH: On the surface that seems true however there are major culprits to weight loss that can stunt progress regardless of the caloric deficit. Stress & lack of sleep being 2 along with hormonal imbalances, & gut health issues.

2.MYTH: Carbohydrates (carbs) make you fat.
TRUTH: Your portions are your poison meaning the over consumption of them is the real culprit. Carbohydrates are an essential macronutrient that our body uses for energy. The issue is most people don't use that energy, so it is stored.

3. MYTH: Breakfast is required to lose weight
TRUTH: Studies do show that breakfast eaters weight less than breakfast skippers & that eating an adequate amount of protein withing an hour of waking boosts metabolism however than is no evidence that shows breakfast is required.

Bottom line is when we focus on wellness, in most cases, the weight will come off. An adequate amount of water, balanced nutrition, caloric deficit, plenty of sleep and stress management, movement....and don't forget laughter!

Ladies, I'm not saying to get big or bulky. What I am saying is that muscle is a fat burner and changes body composition. Muscle has been observed to burn roughly 7 to 10 calories per pound per day, compared to 2 to 3 calories per pound per day for fat when rested.... Some even say that 1lbs burns up to 50 at rest!

💪 Example: You're 140lbs and 30% body fat. 42lbs of that is fat. So you'll burn 84-126 calories per day at rest. Let's say you replaced 10 of those pounds with muscle. Your weight would stay the same, however, you would then burn 134-200.

💪 NOTE: this doesn't include any activity what so ever nor does it factor in metabolism. The bottom line is that muscle burns more calories.
