RIP.... your life mattered
A volunteer writes: Triolo, a medium sized dog of medium age. As handsome as he is, guys like Triolo are often overlooked, as many folks gravitate to the smaller, younger pups. But there's a lot to be said for a more mature dog like Triolo! We know how big he's gonna get - he's full grown. We have a better sense of his personality, likes and dislikes, and energy level. Health issues (if there are any) have usually been identified and managed. And did I mention, the LOVE and loyalty that an adult dog brings with them?? They're past that hyper-crazy-playtime that puppies require, and Triolo wants nothing more than to spend time with his forever person or family - showing what a wonderful companion he is. Dogs make every day more special, and we can't wait for Triolo to have his special day soon as well. Give this medium guy a large boost and adopt him as your own!
What my friends at ACC say about me:
I am playful and cute! I am not one to sit still and will love interactive playtime in my new home! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I need a home where there are no other pets. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! I love getting pets and - you guessed it - snuggles!

4/30/24: Triolo greets the other dog through the gate with a soft body. He play bows then jumps up. He remains soft and is easily called away.
5/10/24: Due to recent home notes, Triolo is muzzled for an off leash interaction. He runs up to the other dog with slightly tense body but engages in rough, jumpy play. He continues to jump on the back of the other dog and at times attempts to mount. However, the other dog moves away and attempts to engage him in play. Triolo reciprocates but will still make attempts to mount.
ENRICHMENT NOTES
5/23/24: Triolo is at the front of his kennel jumping with all 4 paws off the ground when the handler approaches. Triolo when attempting to be leash starts to bite at the leash and tug it into his kennel. Treats are attempting to be used to deter Triolo and eats them, but immediately fixates on the rope when its in sight and begins to bite it. Triolo has to be leash with another rope for him to tug on, while the handler slips the leash over his head. Triolo leaves his kennel and begins to pull hard outside and begins to faint. Triolo is taken to the driveaway to refrain him from pulling and given a treat scatter for him to setttle. Triolo is heavily panting with a wide expression on his face, the handler notices a cut on his face from jumping in his kennel as well. Triolo is unable to settle with the handler and frantically pants while searching for the treats. Triolo is returned to his kennel, still pulling hard and attempts to leash bite but is refocused with treats.
5/14/24: Triolo is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed with treats and taken for a street walk. Triolo checks in with handler for treats. He does not relieve himself. Handler teaches Triolo some 1,2,3 enrichment pattern games. He picks up on this well. Throughout the walk Triolo walks by the handler's side regularly checking in and ignoring outside stimuli. He is brought back to the building and is returned to his kennel without issue.
5/9/24: Triolo is laying in the back of the kennel when handler approaches. He approaches the front of the kennel with a loose wiggly body. He is easily leashed and taken on a street walk. Triolo does not pull on leash and takes treats with mild pressure. When seeing another dog he would pull moderately towards them with a neutral body however, he is easily redirected by calling his name. Handlers rewards Triolo for loose leash walking and for redirecting away from stimuli.
4/29/24: Triolo is jumping up and down in kennel when handler approaches. When handler goes to open the kennel door, he grabs handler's finger with hard pressure but lets go immediately. Handler uses spray cheese to leash Triolo without issue. He is then taken for a long street walk where he walks nicely on leash, checking in with handler and catching treats tossed to him. He then lays down on the ground for a bit before being returned to his kennel without issue.
4/22/24: Triolo is sitting quietly at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. He takes treats hard through the bars and lightly grabs the leash as the handler tries to leash him. He is leashed using treats to distract him. He pulls towards the other dogs kennels on the way out of the room. He is taken for a street walk where he pulls moderately at times but mostly walks alongside the handler, engaging with them for treats frequently. He pulls hard towards a cat but is redirected with a treat toss. He is social with the handler, jumping up on them occasionally. When the handler holds their hand up, Triolo occasionally jumps up and mouths them lightly, searching for treats. He is taken for his assessment where he is very social with the handlers, approaching readily when called with a loose and wiggly body. He allows all handling. He is taken back to his kennel and returns with no issue.
4/13/24: Triolo is observed to be jumping up high in kennel repeatedly and vocalizing incessantly. ACS staff report that he is leash biting in kennel and jumping to get the metal clip at the top of the leash.
4/10/24: Same kennel presentation as described in previous note.
4/8/24- When the handler entered the room Triolo began jumping up and down at the front of their kennel. They were jumping very high with all four paws leaving the ground and barking. They would pause momentarily but would resume the behavior. They continued jumping as the handler left the room.
4/4/24: A staff member reported that Triolo would grab and tug the leash into kennel when attempts are made to leash him. When handler approaches his kennel, he is jumping up and down in kennel frantically while heavy panting. When leashing, when treats are not readily coming, he grabs and tugs the leash. With more treats, he is easily leashed and removed from kennel. Handler clips the leash to his harness and takes him out for a street walk. On the walk, he pulls towards other dogs with a neutral body. Around select members of the public, he has a tense body and fixates on them as they walk by. In shelter, on the elevator ride, he sits and gives paw on cue for treats. He is placed into kennel without further issue
3/30/24: Triolo is at the front jumping up and down in kennel when handler approaches their kennel. He is easily leashed and removed from kennel without issue. He is taken out for a street walk where he walks nicely on leash. He does not react to dogs or other stimuli. He then paws at handler's ankles and handler moves their leg away and he stops the behavior. Handler pets them and he leans into petting. After the walk, he is returned to kennel by tossing treats.
3/23/24: It was reported by staff members that when removed from kennel, Triolo mouth at handlers ankles but can be redirected with treats.
3/12/24: Triolo is at the front of their kennel with a soft body and is easily leashed. He is taken for a street walk. He moderately pulls and is social with handler. While on the street another person is passing with a medium dog and Triolo pulls towards them and gives a soft growl. Handler takes him between 2 cars while they are passing and we continue the walk. He gently takes treats and is easily redirected with them. He was taken for his dog-dog for a gate greet and had a softer body, and play bowed. He is returned to his kennel without issue.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR - Date of intake:: 4/20/2024
Summary:: Loose wiggly body wagging tail
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial:: 4/20/202
Summary:: Body relaxed; easily examined
ENERGY LEVEL:: Triolo is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Triolo.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations::
No children (under 13)
No cats
Single-pet home
Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments::
Due to the high level of jumping up on handlers we recommend an adult only home.
Due to hard barking, lunging, snapping, and attempting to bite dogs and cats we recommend a single pet home, with no cats, that makes no trips to the dog park.
Potential challenges:
House soiling
Resource guarding
Destructive behavior
Basic manners/poor impulse control
Social hyperarousal
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Anxiety
On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:
House Soiling: It is reported that Triolo will have daily accidents in the home. Triolo will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training. Please see handout on House Soiling.
Resource Guarding: While he gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (tense, takes away toy), Triolo did show possible potential to guard items he considers valuable. We cannot be certain if this behavior will be seen in a future home environment. Please see handout on Resource Guarding.
Destructive Behavior: It is reported that Triolo has destructive tenancies in the home. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior.
Basic Manners: Trolo has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit/Stay" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners.
Social Arousal: Trolo can become quickly over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up and attempting to mount. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Trolo to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mounting, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Trolo. Please see handout on Arousal.
Mouthiness: It is reported that Triolo is mouthy. We recommend never playing with bare hands, always with a toy, and ending play or attention whenever Dog puts teeth on skin. Please see handout on Mouthiness.
Anxiety: It is reported that Triolo was anxious in the home. We recommend puzzle toys and long walks to help alleviate their anxiety. Please see handout on General Anxiety.
Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Triolo is noted to be reactive towards cats and dogs. His previous owner had two resident cats and one resident small dog, and reported Triolo would hard bark, lunge, snap, and try to bite at the cats and dogs whenever he saw them. When in a separate room, Triolo remained hypervigilant and would hyperfixate with a tense body on the sounds made by the resident animals outside the door. Triolo will need positive reinforcement training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
Leash Biting/Pulling: It is reported that Triolo will jump up and bite the leash during walks and will pull very hard on leash. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter and that he be trained using positive reinforcement training to not pull on leash. We also recommend walking him with a toy to dissuade him from grabbing the leash.

Cooper has been placed with a New Hope rescue
He’s a shy, sweet Corgi mix who was given up when the only parent he has ever known decided to move to “no pets” housing and leave him behind. COOPER clearly doesn’t know what to make of it, and he’s nursing a broken heart. On intake he was so overwhelmed staff had to hve his owner pick Cooper up with a towel and pass him to them so he could be carried to his kennel. He may be initially shy with new friends, but once he has had a moment to get to know you he is friendly, outgoing and playful! In his former home he was used to being placed in a doggie playpen for up to 8 hours and got to go on short walks 4x a day. Cooper loves car rides, he is housetrained, and he knows the cues for: sit, lay down, off and paw! At the shelter he is greeting staff who come to take him for walks with a loose body and a wagging tail and is easily brought back to his kennel. Cooper needs some further training to help him share his valuable resources, so trade up games and the command “drop it/leave it” will come in handy. He also is not a fan of cats or for his peers, so he’d love to be your “one and only” pet. If you are an experienced foster or adopter who can give this sweet guy a home, hurry and MESSAGE OUR PAGE for assistance.

Medical Behavior Rating: 2. Blue
AT RISK MEMO:
Cooper is on the at-risk list due to behavioral concerns. Cooper's previous owner described him as an independent vocal dog who preferred contact/interaction on his terms. He is reported to have a concerning behavioral history in the last home, including a bite history, resource guarding that included random objects, reactivity towards other dogs and cats, on-leash reactivity during walks, and handling/touch sensitivity. Cooper has been fairly aloof during his stay and chooses to keep to himself. Medically, Cooper is healthy.
Cooper was surrendered to the Care Center due to his family moving to a new home that had a no-pet policy. His previous owner described him as a vocal dog who was independent and preferred contact/interaction on his terms. He is reported to have a concerning behavioral history in the previous home which included a bite history, resource guarding that included random objects, reactivity towards other dogs and cats, on-leash reactivity during walks, and handling/touch sensitivity. During his stay, Cooper has been fairly aloof and chooses to keep to himself. Due to the concerns in his previous home, we do recommend that Cooper be placed in an adult-only home where he can be the only pet through a New Hope Partner that can address his challenges with a positive reinforcement certified trainer or veterinary behaviorist.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR – Date of Intake: 20-May-2024
Upon intake, staff had the owner pick Cooper up with a towel and had the owner pass him to them and he was carried to the kennel room, when staff tried to remove the leash he turned his head quickly towards the staffs hand. He was placed in the kennel and staff had to remove the leash with a hook. While waiting for another staff member to get a hook he hard barked growled at the staff member who was holding the leash.
OWNER SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION:

SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES - Date of assessment:: 5/22/2024
Summary:: Cooper's owner reported significant behavioral challenges, identifying him as a resource guarder of food, treats, and toys, as well as a universal guarder. Cooper exhibits growling, hard barking, snapping, and attempts to bite if anyone approaches, touches, or removes items he deems high value. Six months ago, Cooper bit the owner's child which was a bit and release causing the breaking of the skin when the child tried to grab an item he was guarding, which was a sock. Once the child retreated from the item, Cooper resumed playing with it. During intake When Cooper was brought to the kennel by staff, the owner used a towel to pick him up and passed him to the staff. Cooper was carried to the kennel room, and during the leash removal process, he quickly turned his head toward the staff member's hand. Cooper was placed in the kennel, but staff had to remove the leash with a hook. While waiting for another staff member to retrieve the hook, Cooper displayed concerning behaviors, including hard barking, growling, and spitting at the staff member holding the leash. Due to these behaviors, Cooper is not a safe candidate for a handling assessment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES
5/21/24: Cooper comes to the front of the kennel with a loose body and wagging tail when handler approaches. He dodges the leash slightly, but handler is able to get the rope over his head. He is easily removed from the kennel and walks to the canine behavior office without issue. He explores the assessment room. Cooper walks back and is returned to the kennel without issue.

Summary:: picked up by owner but became difficult when removing leash in kennel
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial:: 5/23/2024
Summary:: visual exam due to behavior history
ENERGY LEVEL::
Cooper is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Cooper.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations::
No children (under 13)
No cats
Single-pet home
Recommend no dog parks
Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments::
No children (under 13): Due to Cooper's bite history, resource guarding, and history of defensive esclations, we recommend an adult-only home.
No cats: Cooper's previous owner reported that he hard barks and growls at cats. Due to this, we recommend that Cooper to be placed in a home without cats or other small animals.
Single-pet home/recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Cooper has shown in his previous home, we feel that Cooper should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior toward other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Cooper associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.
Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Cooper be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Cooper to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward-based training only is advised when introducing Cooper to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Cooper presents with outside of the care centers.
