Our next Q&A question! 👇👇👇
QUESTION: What do you think are the biggest threats to Tree Fruit and Potato growers today? How is it unique from past challenges? How can DAS be applied to navigate through some of these challenges?

Crowder Highlights How DAS Can Trim Production Costs In an effort to help tree fruit growers save on their operating costs, 15 years ago Washington state University rolled out the Decision Aid System. And in that time, the digital Ag tool has become a platform for tree fruit growers, and now potato growers, to stay up to date on real-time weather, di

The recent weather poses an opportunity for our first Q&A.
QUESTION: With the Northwest in record heat, how can utilizing DAS provide additional support to growers and their crops?
Read Dr. Crowder's answer in the comments.
We've been experiencing unprecedented sun and heat. Fruit do not utilize much light energy, so excess light energy is converted to heat injury. On a hot day, the fruit surface temperature (FST) of the sun-exposed side of apple can be 20 to 30 °F above air temperature.

Knowledge is power = DAS
An effective strategy to minimize the selection for resistance to a particular insecticide group is to rotate products from groups with different modes-of-action.
The group numbers, formed by the IRAC insecticide groups, are labeled and listed in DAS in the full WSU Spray Guide under “resistance class”.
The group number can help to determine which products could be used in a rotation strategy to create a sound resistance management program.

Degree Day Models...
You can work on drawing curve models, or instead let DAS automate and calculate degree-days for each pest every day (and even 6 weeks ahead). 💡
We'll even link the degree-day sums to management recommendations, so that DAS users are up to date on their pest management information.

Factors Affecting Bee Pollination of Tree Fruits 🐝
Nearly 1,000 species of bees occur in the Pacific Northwest, but only a small number of species are useful in the pollination of orchard crops. The success of honeybee pollination in tree fruits is affected by a number of factors, which in part can be manipulated by orchardists and beekeepers...
