Jeff Borghoff, once known for his social nature, faced growing isolation as Alzheimer’s disease began to impact his life. Friends slowly faded away, leaving him in a world of loneliness and confusion. But when Right at Home Jersey Shore, NJ caregiver Bernie Branz entered his life, things began to shift. Bernie understood the profound challenges of Alzheimer’s, especially the toll it took on Jeff's sense of connection.

For the past six years, Bernie has been a constant presence every Friday morning for their “Breakfast with Bernie” ritual. Meeting at a cozy local restaurant, they share coffee, hearty breakfasts, and conversations that cover everything from family stories and old movies to sports and tech gadgets. These moments have become a lifeline for Jeff, giving him a sense of purpose and stability in a world that often feels fragmented. Bernie’s presence has brought him friendship and dignity, helping Jeff navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s with grace. Bernie embodies the Right at Home mission of improving the quality of life for those we serve, bringing connection, dignity, and joy into Jeff’s life.

This month, five siblings—all in their 90s—gathered to celebrate the eldest, Harold Hoyle, turning 98! 🎉 Harold (pictured far right) was joined by his “little” brothers and sisters: Gayle Brietske (92), Lowell Hoyle (93), Lyle Hoyle (95), and Genevieve Sherman (97). That’s five siblings over the age of 92!

To add a fun twist to the celebration, the family sported matching shirts with playing cards showing their ages—a nod to their last name and the famous phrase “According to Hoyle,” a reference to the book of rules for card games. What an amazing family and milestone! 💕

In September 2022, Right at Home of Greater Portland, Maine, welcomed Katie Neuguth as one of their first employees, and she quickly became the embodiment of the Right at Home brand. With a strong background in Community Relations within assisted living, Katie's dedication to senior care was unparalleled. Her passion for making a difference led her to champion Parkinson’s awareness, inspired by Right at Home's involvement with the Parkinson’s Foundation Moving Day in Boston. Katie took the lead in bringing Moving Day to Maine, establishing the first event in Payson Park for June 1, 2024. She tirelessly built a committee, selected the location, and raised awareness throughout Maine’s senior care community.

Tragically, Katie passed away in March 2024, leaving Moving Day as her enduring legacy. The Right at Home Greater Portland team honored her by stepping into her role on the committee, ensuring the event's success, and surpassing fundraising goals. Moving Day now stands as a lasting tribute to Katie's unwavering dedication and impact. As we remember Katie, we extend our deepest gratitude for her caring heart and her dedicated efforts to improve the lives of others.

We are pleased to announce Gene Wiersma as Right at Home’s August 2024 Caregiver of the Month. Gene has shown exceptional dedication and compassion in his role as a Caregiver over the last four years here at Right at Home.

Gene shows true dedication to his clients. His commitment to their well-being is evident in the positive impact he has on their lives. Recently, Gene shared his concern about one of the clients he helps once every other week. Our office staff attempted to reach this client without success. Gene received permission from our office to make an unscheduled visit just to check in on him. When he arrived, he noticed he was disoriented, weak, lethargic and at times slurred his speech and had balance issues. Fortunately, Gene was able to convince him to seek medical attention, even drove him to the emergency room where he was admitted and stayed for over two weeks. This situation could have had a very different outcome.

We are extremely proud to have Gene as part of our team! His compassion and commitment to our clients are remarkable. Gene’s heartfelt dedication is a reminder of the impact that a single individual can have on the lives of others. Thank you, Gene!

When Caeli from the corporate office stopped by with a Joy for All Companion Pets companion cat, Miranda, the Quality Assurance Manager at Right at Home Omaha, NE, immediately thought of a specific client. Miranda had been discussing the client's progressing dementia with their son and wondered if the comforting cat might bring some joy to them. Their son thought it was a wonderful idea, so Miranda gifted the cat to the client.
The reaction was heartwarming. Their face lit up as they held the cat, exclaiming, "Oh! Is this your cat?" When Miranda told them it was theirs, they were overjoyed, hugging the cat and saying, "Oh, I love you. You are sleeping with me tonight!" This simple act brought immense happiness to the client, and Miranda's thoughtful gesture exemplified the mission of Right at Home. Kudos to Miranda for recognizing the opportunity to enhance their quality of life with such a meaningful gift.
