As the new year begins, is your youth ministry on the rise or on the decline? Many of us who have been involved in youth ministry for some time have experienced periods of growth as well as decline.

In the past, I dreaded times of decline because they often involved adults and students leaving the ministry. However, I realized that these challenging times actually made me a better youth worker because they forced me to evaluate what was going wrong and make necessary changes.

If you are facing a decline this year, don't get discouraged. Instead, take the time to assess the situation and implement changes. You might be closer to a breakthrough than you realize.

On the other hand, if the year is starting with momentum, make the most of it. Recruit more adult volunteers, encourage your students to develop deep relationships with their peers who are struggling, and consider launching new initiatives. For example, you may want to establish an internship program for college students to get involved in your ministry and gain a better understanding of its operations. Whatever you choose to do, seize the opportunity.

If your students are struggling with loneliness or feeling isolated, consider using the Never Alone DNow study to help them learn about the power of God's presence.

Teamwork
So, why don't more ministries embrace teamwork? I believe this is because teamwork requires hard work. Although it may seem easy, in reality, it demands commitment and dedication. To foster good teamwork, three essential elements are required:

1. Clearly Defined Roles:
Everyone needs a defined role and a clear understanding of their responsibilities. When team members act independently, teams can quickly become chaotic. It's crucial for leaders to provide job descriptions, ensure adherence to these roles, and evaluate individual performance.

2. Clear Mission:
Teams should rally around a single mission and work collectively to support it. A leader's primary responsibility is to keep the team aligned with the mission. When a leader does this effectively and team members are committed to the mission, teamwork becomes enjoyable.

3. Equal Sacrifice:
Successful teamwork is characterized by equal sacrifice among team members. When individuals on the team are disproportionately burdened with sacrifices, it can lead to jealousy and resentment. If leaders bear the brunt of the sacrifices, they may become resentful towards the team. Equal sacrifice fosters a willingness to make sacrifices and brings great joy to the team.

Student ministries need to make owners of students and one way to do this is to start a student leadership program. Through a student leadership program students will set goals, resource projects, cast vision, rally the troops, lead ministries and be responsible of the success or failure of the group. Leadership teams have the potential to transform students’ thinking.
