I know there's a lot we can't control, so I want to focus on what we CAN! How about weight gain, anyone else pack on some extra pounds? On one hand you want to say "who cares", there's a pandemic and I'm eating bread and ALL THE CHOCOLATE! That sounds reasonable, doesn't it?

Problem is, we all pay the price for that. For some it immediately shows up on around our waist. For others, it greatly increases our risk of infection and serious outcomes - yes, obesity makes many things worse including Covid, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Really though, it is a CALL TO SELF CARE and I know I need to do better...how about you? So here is what is happening and not only do I hope YOU'LL join me, I hope you tell everyone else you know - I want this to go far & wide!

What is INTERMITTENT FASTING? โฑ๏ธ

It refers to CYCLES of restricted vs not restricted calories may be no food, liquids, lower calories and many other options!

POTENTIAL BENEFITS: lower cholesterol, free radicals, inflammation and triglycerides, improves blood pressure, antioxidants, blood sugar, brain functions

Types of INTERMITTENT FASTING:
Time Restricted Feeding - 16 hrs without food, 8 hour eating window.
Alternate Day Fasting- intervals, maybe only 600 calories or just water/electrolytes, could be 1-2 x per week
Modified Fasting - Cut calories for a specified number of days, for example on Tuesday and Thursday
Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) - Keto diet for 5 days each month, low calories/low carbohydrates

NOT RECOMMENDED DURING: pregnancy or lactation and caution or avoid with diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypoglycemia
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR THOSE WITH: eating disorders, insulin use, low BP, heart arrhythmias and may not work until Adrenal issues are duly resolved (HPA axis disorders).

Avoid and be mindful of these ingredients that may harm the gut โ€ผ๏ธ

REFINED SWEETENERS, including sugar, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, fruit juices, etc.

MODERN VEGETABLES OILS, including hardened shortenings, margarines, spreads and liquid oils.

MSG, which is often not labeled; almost all processed foods contain MSG, even low fat dairy products.

ADDITIVES, including artificial dyes, flavorings and preservatives.

ASPARTAME (in Nutrasweet and Equal) is associated with panic attacks, depression, bipolar disorder, memory problems and other symptoms of mental illness.

GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) can disrupt gut flora; the herbicide Round-Up used on GMOs is associated with a rise in autism.

Research has shown that this diet is good for obesity, epilepsy, diabetes, and lowering cardiovascular risk. There is also some evidence for sorting out neurological, immune, and hormonal issues. The risk is it can be too low in fiber, or if not done properly (ex โ€œdirty keto).

If you get your calories primarily from fat, low protein, get the essential amount and a low amount of carbohydrates, large amount leafy greens, low/eliminate starchy veggies, and no fruit/grains/sugar...you will enter a state of KETOSIS.

It typically takes a minimum of 3 weeks to get to this state.

In this state your body will burn the fat from your diet as fuel and then grab from stored fat for fuel (quick weight loss, low insulin levels). It is important to have breaks between meals, to not over-eat amounts/protein and strictly avoid high carbohydrates.
Most people opt for a High Fat Low Carbohydrate style of eating which is often healthier than what they are doing now, but donโ€™t deliver the same benefits as ketosis.

Be careful to not just add fat without subtracting carbohydrates. It is a surefire way to gain weight.

Lastly, Do NOT engage in JUNK KETO โ€“ it is an excuse to eat tons of bacon, cheese & pork rinds and is definitely not wise!

A study on โ€œCompassionate Careโ€ which is a patient-centered model that reduces doctor burnout and ultimately provides better healthcare, suggests that a practitioner always remember these points:

Realize that you cannot fix everything, there will be problems you can't solve.
Entrust your colleagues.
Step back from your initial emotional reactions. Look at everything twice.
Have some sort of spiritual practice.
Keep in mind the meaning and privilege of being a healer ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
Have a balanced life and be sure to make time for it
Be empathic, but understand that your patientโ€™s suffering is not your suffering.

Through the process of digestion and breaking down our food into nutrients to nourish every cell in body โ€“ for literally supporting ALL functions!

Gut health is essential to brain health, as 80-95% of serotonin is made in gut. Researchers are finding evidence that irritation in the gastrointestinal system may send signals to the central nervous system that trigger mood changes.

๐ŸฅŠ Fighting infection and disease
The gut lining (epithelial tissue) is home to over 70% of our immune system cells! Although it may not be obvious, there is a clear connection supported through research & clinical practice between digestive problems and allergies, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, IBS, acne, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, autism, dementia and cancer.

๐Ÿฆ  Bacteria Baby - We rent a Duplex!
We are a mix (likely 1:1.34) of โ€œbacteriaโ€ and โ€œhumanโ€ cells. Balance, overgrowth or absence of these bacterial strains have various effects on overall health.

Let's take a look at The 5 "R" Protocol...in other words how to HEAL the GUT๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฅ—

1๏ธโƒฃ Remove - Using a course of antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-fungal therapies (and anti parasitic therapies in cases where these organisms are present) It may be necessary to remove certain antagonists like offending foods and medications.

2๏ธโƒฃ Replace - With malabsorption, it may be necessary to restore proper digestion with digestive enzyme supplementation.

3๏ธโƒฃ Reinoculate - Recolonizing the healthy, beneficial gut bacteria. Supplementation with probiotics, along with prebiotic and probiotic foods to help reestablish the microbiome.

4๏ธโƒฃ Repair - Restoring the integrity of the gut mucosa by giving support to healthy mucosal cells and the immune system.

5๏ธโƒฃ Rebalance - Addressing whole body health and looking at lifestyle factors to prevent future gut imbalances.

Leaky gut follows a predictable cycle, and here's how it occurs ๐Ÿ”„

1๏ธโƒฃ Disruption of the Gut Lining
Contributing factors from alcohol, stress, anti-inflammatory drugs, food intolerance, fatty acid deficiencies, candida and antibiotics.

2๏ธโƒฃ Improper Absorption
A disrupted gut lining may result in improper absorption and certain foods can be seen as invaders of the body.

3๏ธโƒฃ Inflammation
IgG antibodies will form a complex with food antigens. These complexes are deposited into the gut, causing inflammation.

4๏ธโƒฃ Leaky Gut
Inflammtaion in the gut will cause nutrient and waste to leak out of the gut. This makes improper absorptoion worse, and increases IgG production.

5๏ธโƒฃ Multiple Food Intolerances
Gut inflammation causes IgG antibodies to be produced for multiple foods...which leads back to...Disruption of the Gut Lining.
