What You Need To Know About Choosing New Doors and Windows
When you begin considering your options for new windows and door replacement, you might not know where to start. In fact, there are three basic elements that you need to select. It is ideal to have an idea of what you might be looking for before speaking to a professional door and window contractor.
Material
For windows, two common material options for the frames are vinyl and composite. Vinyl tends to be highly efficient, sealing out air, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Composite, on the other hand, is made of fiberglass and wood chips and is touted for its strength and durability. Moreover, the design of composite frames can more closely mimic original wood frames for a traditional aesthetic. Composite and fiberglass are often used for solid exterior doors as well, as they provide optimal protection and durability against the elements.
Glass
When it comes to choosing the glass for your windows and door replacement, the crucial factor to consider is insulation. Glass that is not well insulated allows heat from the sun to pe*****te the inside of your house, which can significantly affect your heating and cooling bills. For more temperate climates, it is often recommended to choose an insulated glass fitted with technology that keeps your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Some glass materials, alternatively, are better suited for tropical climates and filter out almost all external heat.
Style
Windows are often available in single or double hung, sliding, bay, or awning style. Your choice often depends on the purpose of the room where the window will hang and how you plan to interact with the outside. Beyond that, hung windows are often selected for their more traditional look. For doors, you may be installing a new front door, French doors, or sliding patio doors. No matter where the doors are in your house, the style you choose will generally reflect your personal design choice as well as the function of the door.
Take on your new windows and door replacement with these key decisions in mind. Hire a local professional who can advise on the best options for your home.

The One Question You Must Ask Before You Buying New Windows.
One of the biggest ratings homeowners neglected to ask their replacement window representative is, “What is the air infiltration rating of the window?”
The fact of the matter is thousands of homeowners each year replace their current windows with “new” windows that leak just as much. In the end they are not happy because their problem is not solved. By asking two simple questions you will know what windows ‘leak’ the least. Everything with moving parts leaks to a degree. When replacing your existing windows with ‘new’ more energy efficient windows, you want the window that leaks the least. Here are the two questions to ask;
1. ”What is the air infiltration rating of your window?”
2. ”Is that rating supported by the AAMA?”
If, the window’s air infiltration rating is supported by the AAMA (a independent governmental testing lab) you know the information you are getting is accurate and that the windows being installed in your home will match the information you told.
Windows made by Okna Windows & Door company are among the finest available in the U.S., and there are many advantages to choosing one or more of the OKNA types of windows for homes and commercial properties.
Air Infiltration for Okna Double Hung Model 500 is 1000% Better than Industry Average
• Every OKNA window meets or exceeds Energy Star®, AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturers Association) and NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) energy performance standards. “OKNA windows spacers insulate the edge of the glass better than solid foam or metal spacers...warmer glass makes you feel more comfortable while using less energy.” The window spacers improve the total U-Value for your windows, reducing energy loss.
• “The OKNA window warranty is one of the strongest in the business. It covers the windows for the life of the (home)owner and is completely transferable,” says Replacement Windows Reviews. “It’s a single-page warranty that you can actually read, instead of some 3-page, tiny-print warranty.”
• “OKNA vinyl windows sit at the very top of the rather large vinyl window industry,” continues the Replacement Windows Review. Although OKNA’s types of windows are very much in demand, their individual customer support remains consistently dependable.

How to Tell If Your Windows Need Replacing
Having windows that are in great shape certainly adds value to your home. But, how can you tell when it’s time to replace them? When installed properly, windows can last for years without needing to be updated. However, if the windows in your home do need a makeover, there are a few telltale signs that will help you to get the timing right and prevent you from replacing windows that are still functioning well. Here are some things to look out for in your home.
1. You can feel a draft.
All windows, even if installed perfectly will let a very small amount of air in and out when they are closed. This is totally normal. But if you are walking by your windows and you notice that you can actually feel the draft of air then that’s when it’s time for concern. This will affect the temperature in your home, not to mention your electricity or gas bill.
There are a few reasons that older windows have a tendency to let in more unwanted outdoor air. For one, as new homes start to settle, the framing naturally adjusts. Sometimes, if the windows weren’t installed properly this will leave gaps and opportunities for air or worse, water to pe*****te through the framework. Another reason for drafts is that wooden frames, especially in colder or seasonal climates expand, contract and warp. The more winters these frames weather, the higher the chance for unwanted drafts to pull through.
While many windows are built to stand the test of time, like everything else, it’s a good idea to check for deterioration with age. If your windows don’t looks as clear anymore, there is a very good reason for that. Glass is actually scientifically considered to be a liquid, not a solid. That’s why over the years it warps and distorts. After about fifty years, if it is not broken or destroyed by then, you can barely see through it at all!
Also, after ten years, there is a good chance that there will be a few windows in a home that have been subject to some type of wear and tear, whether it be from chips, or fractures. Not only will fractures obstruct your view, and potentially drive up your heating bill, but falling glass is incredibly dangerous in the even that one of the cracked windows breaks. All it takes is a flash freezing or extreme dip in temperature cause a fracture to shatter. It’s definitely better to replace your windows during a warmer season than to have to band aid a solution in the middle of winter!
2. It’s difficult to open or shut your windows.
If you’re having difficulty opening and closing your windows, this is a sign that they need to be replaced. Many slider windows lose their ability to “slide” open over time. As well, it was mentioned above that wood warps. This is another reason why a window may be difficult to open.
3. You see condensation.
This is a very bad sign. Condensation can lead to mold growth and many allergens. It also might be an indication of a bigger problem like a water leak. This is a situation that should be addressed immediately. Maintain a healthy home environment for you and your family by replacing your windows if something is causing condensation between panels of double or triple paneled windows.

Elevate Your Space With a New Bay/Bow Windows
Bay/Bow windows are a little like the fairy tale cousin of regular windows. They’re beautiful, they make rooms feel more spacious and open, and they even double as a cozy reading spot or display area. If you’ve ever felt jealous of the unicorn homeowners out there who happen to have found that perfect house with a bay window nook, don’t despair! Fortunately, having a bay window replacement installed is completely doable for window installation professionals and can be an excellent addition to a living room, dining room or bedroom.
Construction Process
During the process of having a new bay window added to your home, your contractor will remove the current window, measure and cut a correctly sized space for the new window replacement. Support beams will be added and the new windows attached and then will come framing, insulation, sheeting and roofing. Once the window is completed your contractor will seal the bottom with a window skirt and the edges with exterior caulking.
Design Process
Now comes the fun part: what will you use your window for? Perhaps you can have a soft-cushioned seat added in front of the new window for a comfy reading nook, or maybe you want to design built-in shelving beneath and around it to show off some of your treasures. A breakfast table can fit perfectly in front of a bay window, and you can even have a kitchen bench installed in front. For some added storage, consider looking into benches with shelving underneath or hinged tops that open for areas to keep extra small appliances, linens, decorations or tableware.
Windows can feel like magic in a home: they add light, create interest, and make rooms feel larger. Bay windows can do all that and more. They add an inviting air of charm and can be a delightful addition that may make you wonder how you got so lucky. These beautiful windows are more than worth considering in your next window replacement project.

Window Replacement Tips
If you have old windows in your home, you are probably leaking energy and may even have water leaks. Choosing to get your windows replaced is a big decision because it can be costly. In addition, you want to get the right windows so they last. As you work with a professional window replacement contractor, consider these tips.
Research Different Window Features
If you haven’t replaced your windows in several years, or ever, you may be surprised at the different features you can choose from. For example, what type of lock do you want, how do you want them to open, do you need double-hung or thick glass that is difficult to break, even for flying projectiles?
You can also choose the color and style of your windows. For example, do you want them to have grilles or grids between the glass? The color, style and features of your windows can have a significant impact on the look of your home, increasing its curb appeal as well as its energy efficiency.
You also have options for your window glass. For example, you can choose low-e glass, which allows in natural light without adding heat to your home. You can choose windows that have built-in blinds or gas that turns the glass opaque, which is especially beneficial in bathrooms.
Research Different Window Materials
Ask your window replacement contractor about the types of windows that are available. You can choose casements made from wood, fiberglass, aluminum and vinyl. The choice that is best for you will depend on your home, location and weather. Some casements also promote better energy efficiency because they have stronger seals and some have little to no maintenance requirements and long lifespans.
Find the Right Installer
Window replacement installation is at least as important as the type of window you choose. You see, if your windows aren’t installed properly, they won’t work properly. They will have leaks, can be damaged easier and won’t last as long. Also, search for an installer that offers a warranty and has experience in your area.
Although getting your windows replaced can be expensive, if you choose the right windows and installation contractor, you will save money in the long term.
