The image of the child musician crying was classified as one of the most emotional photographs of modern history.
This photo was taken of a 12-year-old Brazilian boy (Diego Frazzo Turkato), playing the violin at the funeral of his teacher who rescued him from the environment of poverty and crime in which he lived.
In this image, humanity speaks with the strongest voice in the world:
"Cultivate love and kindness in a child to sow the seeds of compassion. And only then you will build a great civilization, a great nation ".

Here is an example of a set of verbal cues for Chaturanga Dandasana from my new book, Teaching Yoga with Verbal Cues.
What is a verbal cue? A verbal cue is a concise command that gives a clear direction to a student. They are an essential tool for a teacher and are just as important as a physical adjustment. They help the student to find actions throughout the body so they can become skillful and autonomous in expressing a pose.

As long as yoga or meditation or withdrawing inward exists there will be people that attack and attempt to devalue such practices. Alan Watts book "The Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are" is aptly titled because it is amazing how resistant many people from many different spheres are to the simple, basic, essential human act of withdrawing inward. Yoga when done properly is its own powerful political stance---or at least can help each person come to know who they are in an essential basic, profound and sacred sense. Yoga helps you come to your own voice, to think for yourself, and helps identify what is really important and worth fighting for. Yoga doesn't have to be all or nothing--all yoga and no politics or social conscience or vice versa-in fact-the two are essential to each other. You could argue that there is far too much group think happening, many folks could use a good daily dose of withdrawing into the cave and spending time in solitude. Being established in a discipline of introspection and reflection like yoga is as essential as eating food and drinking water or standing up and using your voice to address a wrong when it occurs within your midst.

IN PERSON MYSORE INTENSIVE
OUTERBANKS, NC
Sept 12-17, 2021
Join me for a 6 day in person Mysore intensive this fall. 👉🏽www.davidgarrigues.com
This is so important. Thanks David Garrigues
I’ve received applications to my 2nd Series Mysore course where the students are apologetic about not being able to do some of the more difficult 1st Series Poses like Marichyasana D or Supta Kurmasana. This indicates that students are receiving wrong messages within Ashtanga about what constitutes learning or growth in practice.
The goal of practicing a pose ought not be superficial. For example doing Marichyasana D is more about setting a proper leg and arm foundation and evenly rotating your spine along the vertical axis instead of binding your hands together. The goal of Supta Kurmasana is more about skillfully exploring the range of motion of your hips than putting your legs behind your head.
The real value in doing challenging poses is to face the challenges intelligently and this involves making conscious concessions. A concession is something given up or allowed in the face of difficulty. Hard poses require you to give up some aspect of alignment or allow something to be less than perfect and you can either unconsciously default into making concessions or you can choose your concessions.
If binding in Marichyasana D compromises your foundation or spinal twist then it is superior to concede the bind while retaining the foundation and skillful rotation. And to circle back to the problem in Ashtanga it is harmful to give the message that in order to move onto further poses or series a student must ignore the process of making concessions in favor of achieving superficial aspects of pose. A student’s readiness to move forward in a series ought to be based their understanding of how to prioritize what has real value—even if this means eliminating lesser and yet more visible, conventionally applauded aspects of a pose. Ashtanga is a great hatha yoga system and yet we must leave behind such outdated rules in order to be more inclusive and realize its full beauty and potency.
