It is important to take care of your mind and body as many of us are experiencing increased amounts of stress and burnout. Pilates is a great way to help relieve tension and stress from the body.

Have you heard of the mind-body connection?

The Pilates Principles encourage a direct awareness of the movements and our breathing during sessions. This awareness helps us to notice where we may be holding stress in our bodies and make a plan to alleviate it. Coordinated breathing allows for increased relaxation and mindfulness. The mind-body connection is also essential for injury prevention, which helps prevent additional stress on the body and daily functioning.

Pilates Move: The Saw

The Saw is a pilates move that helps strengthen the abs, obliques, quads, hamstrings, and pelvic floor muscles. This is a beginner movement, but may be challenging for those with tight neck, shoulder, or hamstring muscles.
If this is you, you can do this movement with modifications.
Do this movement 6-10x/ set.

On April 30th and May 7th I will be teaching a virtual Pilates Mat Class with the soft ball. This class will be low intensity and beginner friendly.

After the last virtual class, I received great feedback about how the class supported participants’ everyday activities like sitting at their desks, gardening, golf and walking.

Why a live class? Participants shared that live classes help them to stay motivated and committed to attendance.

About 26 million people with uteruses have fibroid tumors, and Black people are disproportionately affected.

Fibroids can cause a range of symptoms, impacting physical and mental health and well-being. Treatments can vary and are dependent on the size, number, and location of the fibroids.

Pilates helped me manage my symptoms and strengthen my muscles for labor and delivery in my late 30s.

This is a standard Pilates movement that helps to warm up your abdominals and lungs. It gets the blood flowing!

Since it can be challenging, this video demonstrates modifications for variations in core strength or other physical needs.

We like cardio exercises because they increase the oxygen and blood flow throughout the body.

It is important to prioritize having a yearly physical and checking in on your heart health.

My name is Velma, and I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Pilates Instructor. I have worked in this field for 25+ years and opened my practice, Lakeview Physical Therapy, in 2008.

At Lakeview Physical Therapy, each client receives one on one personalized sessions. At my practice, I provide quality care by utilizing clinical expertise, scientific knowledge, and current research.

Through Lakeview Physical Therapy, I also offer Pilates equipment and mat classes and 60+ wellness classes.

Community education is an essential part of my work. I believe this is critical to preventing and delaying many health issues. You can regularly catch me at school, church, and other community events.

Outside of my practice, I make time to practice Pilates, go on nature walks, listen to podcasts, read, and spend time with my family.
